(May 14, 2001) San Diego, Ca. In a late race incident, with the leaders pushing for position, Austin Cameron was involved in an accident that put his night to an end with just a few laps remaining. On lap 245 of 250 Cameron was involved in a turn 2 accident with Sean Woodside which sent him into the wall and out of the race.
“We were running OK all night”, said Austin. “The car got pretty tight in the middle of the race and I really had to work to drive it, we would have finished in the top ten if we hadn’t gotten tangled up.” The #12 AC Motorsports Chevrolet Monte Carlo started the race from the 11th position on the grid and quickly worked it’s way up to 5th with Austin smoothly piloting it around the ½ mile speedway. Austin and the team had an awesome pit stop on lap 84, which got them out in 2nd position after coming in from the 6th spot. “The guy’s had 2 great pit stops tonight”, said Austin. “I think we picked up three or four positions in the pits on that first stop we made.” “The team did an awesome job trying to get me back out after the crash”, said Cameron, “but the car was just to damaged to return.” At nights end, the team took a 16th place finish and moved back one spot in the points standings to 2nd. The next race for the NASCAR Winston West Series will be next weekend at the Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca for the Foods Co. NASCAR Challenge. The race will take place on Sunday May 20th and is scheduled to start up at 1:00pm. Austin was last year’s pole sitter at this event and hopes to have another exciting weekend on one of the West Coasts most exciting road courses.
Be sure to catch the first airing of the Mesa Marin race on Fox Sports West2 this Tuesday May 15th at 1:00pm PST and on Thursday May 17th at 8:00pm PST and see pole sitter Austin Cameron make his way around the ½ mile in Bakersfield and come home with a second place finish.
