WHELEN NIGHT AT EVERGREEN SPEEDWAY

MONROE, Washington — Saturday night June 5th it is ‘Whelen Night at the Races’ featuring five of Evergreen Speedway’s racing divisions. The NASCAR Whelen All American Series Super Late Models and Street Stocks are back in action on the 3/8-mile oval. The super Late Models will have two features on the same night. Also returning are the Foster Press Mini-Stocks and the two figure eight divisions the Stinger 8’s and the Super Figure Eights. It is ‘Driver Appreciation Night’.

The point’s battles for the 2010 championships heat back up with mid-season drawing near. The Super Late Models and Street Stocks return after three weeks to more familiar territory the 3/8-mile oval. Each has spent two weeks on the monster 5/8-mile including a week off. The Foster Press Mini-Stocks have not raced since mid May. The Super Figure Eights have not had a point’s race since May 8th.

In the NASCAR Whelen All American Series feature division Street Stocks the points are extremely tight with first only 30-points up on the eighth place driver. Leader Lane Sundholm (defending champion of this division) took the points lead over after winning three in a row including the back to back wins on the 5/8-mile races. Darrell Lutovsky and Frank Cowgill hold the next two positions only 3-points and 4-points respectively behind Sundholm. The season is similar to 2009 with the championship being decided on the last night of the season and nearly the last lap, amongst these same three drivers.

The same goes for the NASCAR Whelen All American Series Super Late Model division with a tight chase for the championship. Current leader Tom Moriarity has a slim 5-point margin over Jeff Knight and only 15 up on third spot held by Daniel Moore. With a doubleheader scheduled it will be pivotal night for all towards the highly sought after 2010 championship.

In the Foster Press Mini-Stock division Jon Roberts has a 4-point edge on Nat Barber and 19 on Kris Harriss (defending champion). After the long layoff this division is the most anxious to get back at it for the run at the2010 championship.

With an even longer span since they had a point’s race the Super Figure Eight division is excited to get going again. Jake Repin is on top of the points list with a 26-point lead over many time champion John Carlson. Third through eighth are separated by a mere 24-points and all are well within striking distance of the leader with a lot of the season remaining.

The fifth division in action on Saturday night will be the popular Stinger 8 division. Current point leader Steve Peters is after his first championship in this division. Mike Middleton and Lance O’Grain are second and third.
