MERIDIAN, Idaho — Jeff Hill made his brother happy Saturday night at ASA-sanctioned Meridian Speedway.
And when your brother is also owns your racing team -- and happens to be defending series champion and current ESI Xpress ASA Modifieds points leader Tom Hill of Eagle, Idaho -- making him happy is a good thing.
Jeff Hill, the Boise Police officer who races out of Meridian, could do no wrong Saturday. He raced to the fast time in qualifying and then swept both main events on Boys & Girls Club Night.
Other main event winners included Emmett, Idaho's Dan Buckley in the NAPA Latemodel Sportsman division; Meridian's Kale Freedman in the Project Filter Pro-4s; Jason Sanders of Caldwell, Idaho, in the Mini Stocks; and Jonathan Hull of Boise, Idaho, in the Jr. Stingers.
Jeff Hill won the first main of the evening, leading his brother to the checkered flag as the ASA Modifieds kicked off the feature action. Tom Hill probably maintained his points lead after the night's races. He finished second in the first main, but was out of the top five in the second. But series No. 2 Shelby Stroebel of Nampa, Idaho, had only one top-five finish Saturday, taking fourth in the first feature.
In the second feature, Jeff Hill worked his way to the front after starting the race in the 13th position. He worked his way up to seventh place within four laps and was sitting in second place behind Kevin Zimmer of Horseshoe Bend, Idaho, with 21 laps left in the 35-lap feature. Fourteen laps later, Hill moved to the front.
Buckley had to hold off a new face to the 2010 season who certainly is no stranger to Meridian Speedway. Dennis Wurtz II of Boise made as strong season debut, clicking off the fast time in qualifying and finishing fourth in the Fast Dash for the Latemodel Sportsman.
Wurtz was back in the main event, but points leader Buckley made it to the line first for another 2010 feature win.
Racing action continued Sunday night with the City of Meridian-presented Fireworks Spectacular and an appearance by the Intermountain Vintage Sprintcars as well as competition from house series including the Mtn. Dew Winged Sprintcars, the Pepsi Sprintcars, the College of Western Idaho Professional Truck Driving School Street Stocks and the Tates Rents Hornets.
Saturday, the Pro-4s will take center stage for the Project Filter Pro-4 All-Star Challenge. Also competing on Military Appreciation Night are the NAPA Latemodel Sportsman, CWI PTDS Street Stocks, Domino's Pizza Legends and the Thunder Dogs.
Gates open at 4 p.m. with racing starting at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $7.50 for senior citizens and military personnel with ID and $6 for children ages 7-11. Children 6 and younger get in free, as always.
