SAN BERNARDINO, California — There was another dominant performance in the Super Late Models at Orange Show Speedway Saturday night. But this time it came from Brett Edwards and not David Ross.
Edwards, who had been fast all season, this time translated that speed into a win in the 50-lap main event, taking the lead from Mark Shackleford on lap 20 and steadily increasing his advantage until taking the checkered flag 1.85 seconds ahead of Shackleford.
Ross, who had won four in a row and six of seven overall, never was a factor in this one. Unhappy with his primary car after qualifying, he went to a backup, started at the rear of the 14-car field and could advance only to sixth place. That was good news for Shackleford, the 2009 champion, who picked up 8 points on Ross and trails by 6 with four races remaining.
Edwards, in a Chevrolet Monte Carlo from Linny White’s Who’s That Guy Chassis Works, averaged 48.945 miles per hour for the 50 laps over the quarter-mile paved oval.
Dan French made it two wins in a row and three in the past four races in the 35-lap Interstate Batteries Factory Fours main event and Dwayne Blay forged ahead of Kim Marzullo in their Battle of the Sexes for the class title. The two went into the night tied with three of the 10 events to go. Blay finished second and took a 6-point lead when Marzullo limped home fifth after her Toyota truck suffered heavy damage in a collision with Tony Forfa IV and Greg France on lap 6. Forfa IV, who had been tied with Victor Garcia for third, now trails Garcia by 10 points.
Robby Hornsby Jr., who had suffered his first defeat of the season July 17, got back in the winner’s circle by capturing the 35-lap Team Too Pony Stock main and Darren Amidon took the 35-lap Budweiser Legends Cars encounter. The big winner in that race, however, was 13-year-old Riley Sawyers, who clinched the 2010 class title with three races to go. Sawyers leads Derek Lacey by 158 points with a maximum of 150 available.
Nevada Chovan, a 12-year-old from Rialto (Ca.) got his third straight win and fourth overall in the Stock OHV Kart class and pulled within 2 points of leader Steven Larson with three races remaining. Parker Malone, 13, extended his lead in the M.C. Erectors Bandoleros class with his fourth win of the season in their 20-lap feature.
