SAN BERNARDINO, California — Jeff Peterson continued his late season charge toward what he hopes is a championship by going from next-to-last to first in the JAM Sportswear Late Model main event Saturday night at Orange Show Speedway.
The 19-year-old Peterson, of Riverside (Ca.), cut Ron Daniel’s lead to 7 points with his third victory in the past four races. Daniel, who finished fourth, went into the 50-lap event, the 11th of 15 on the season, with a 25-point advantage.
Daniel had started at the rear of the field in every race this season in an effort to increase his chances of earning passing points by moving through the field. But this time he elected to start near the front (fifth) in the 15-car field and it was Peterson, the fast qualifier, who opted for a rear start (14th).
It seemed for a while like Daniel had made the best decision. In a race marred by 10 yellow caution flags, the Mentone (Ca.) resident led early and appeared in position to vie for his first win of the season. The flurry of early cautions – seven in the first 18 laps – allowed Peterson to move through the field easily, however, and once he took the lead for the first time on lap 18 it was obvious it was his race to lose.
Brandon Loverock bid for the top spot several times on restarts, but Peterson easily repelled each challenge and took the checkered flag 1.210 seconds in front of Loverock, with Matt Goodwin third, Daniel fourth and Logan Mainella fifth.
The Daniel-Peterson battle will resume Aug. 21, when the Late Models will run a pair of 50-lap races.
After the Late Models got done, “Barefoot Billy” Ziemann of Bloomington (Ca.) brought the curtain down on the program by winning the 30-lap main event for the Pick-A-Part Outlaw Figure 8s. Rod Proctor and Jay Henson were second and third, respectively.
Cliff Conklin of Big Bear Lake (Ca.), the 2007 class champion, got his second win in a row in the 35-lap Pick-A-Part Street Stock main event. Conklin, who led all but one lap, survived a caution flag that erased his 1-second lead with three laps to go and beat fast qualifier Jesse Lawson by 0.206 seconds.
Shaun Estes of Riverside (Ca.) beat Wicked Racing teammate Kevin Cook of Riverside to win the 35-lap Stock Cars USA main and David Glidewell of Riverside won the 15-lap Pro 4 race.
The Western Racing Association’s vintage open-wheelers opened the show with Riverside resident Donovan Stark driving an Offenhauser to victory in a 12-lap Midget race and 65-year-old Jack Kersell of Santee (Ca.) taking the 12-lap Sprint Car feature.
