The Willow Springs Speedway will be turning their street stock division loose this Saturday night for the running of the Golden 100. That's 100 laps of bumper to bumper street stock action around their quarter mile paved oval. The speedway is located within the mammoth Willow Springs International Motorsports Park in Rosamond-California. The race is being promoted by the entity known as "Beyond Willow Speedway."
Over the past few weeks the speedway officials have been spreading the word among street stock teams throughout southern California and eastern Arizona regarding the Golden 100. Drivers are guaranteed at least $75 for taking the green flag. The race winner is going to take home $500. The purse for this race has also been enhanced by the availability of lap money, $10 per lap to be exact. But Beyond Willow Speedway officials are not stopping the lap sales at 100. Any additional lap money collected will be generously donated to Kid's Charities of the Antelope Valley.
The Golden 100 will have a very special guest. The race is named in honor of Brian Golden, a well known sports writer, and long time speedway supporter, with the "Antelope Valley Press." Golden will be on hand Saturday to present the honorary green flag prior to the street stock trophy dash.
While the Golden 100 is being promoted as an event for street stock cars, super stock teams have also been invited to race. However the super stocks may be subject to some weight and/or possible restrictor plate provisions. For complete details, regarding race rules for both divisions, dial www.willowspringsraceway.com and then click on Speedway Willow Springs. You can also contact Rick Fife, Beyond Willow Springs Race Director, at 661 706 8840.
The Golden 100 already has some pre entries comprised of some very popular drivers with the Willow Springs Speedway fans. That list includes Palm Desert's Bobby Dezarov who is no stranger to a victory lane ceremony at the speedway. Fellow super stock driver Kelly Whitfield, from Rosamond will also be eyeing the $500 winner's check. Joining them from the street stock ranks will be Acton's Adam Jefferies, Curtis Drye, from Hawaiian Gardens, and La Cresenta's Gary Marler. A lot more street stock teams, from area tracks such as the Toyota Speedway at Irwindale, Orange Show Speedway, Victorville Auto Raceway and even the Havasu 95 Speedway in Arizona are reported to have expressed interest in this special race.
On Saturday race day the gates will open at 12 noon. Practice sessions will be held from 3 to 5 pm followed by qualifying at 530 pm. The racing starts at 7 pm.
Tickets are $10 general admission with kids eight and under admitted free. From 3 to 7 pm fans may purchase pit passes for only $10. The passes will be available at the gate adjacent to turn three. This special pit pass is available to fans only and not to members of pit crews.
The outstanding part about visiting the Willow Springs complex is the fact that a general admission ticket admits you to all of the activities at all of their tracks for both Saturday and Sunday. For example, on Saturday you can watch the exciting action of the Willow Springs Motorcycle Club on the nine turn road course, take in some sports car racing from the BMW Club on the Streets Of Willow Springs road course and then take a very short ride to the Willow Springs Speedway to watch the Golden 100.
While the Golden 100 is going to be a special evening all by itself, there will be another special occasion being observed at the Speedway Saturday night. Beyond Willow Speedway will be officially celebrating their first anniversary that night. Like the proverbial "Little Engine That Could", from the famed children's fable, Beyond Willow Speedway has worked very hard in an effort to obtain their goals. This effort has been heavily supported by the Huth family, the proprietors of Willow Springs International Motorsports Park, who truly want to see this group successfully promote stock car racing at the speedway.
