EL CAJON TEEN GETS SUPER LATE MODEL WIN BY DECISION AT ORANGE SHOW SPEEDWAY

SAN BERNARDINO, California — Jake Engle got his first Super Late Model main event victory Saturday night at Orange Show Speedway, but it was a little late in coming.

Engle was declared the winner following a protest of the original order of finish and a review of the scoring by Best in the West Racing officials.

David Ross had taken the checkered flag on the track, with Engle second. But race officials determined that Ross was erroneously lined up as the race leader instead of Engle following a caution flag caused when Ross and Brett Edwards collided with 6 laps to go and awarded the win to Engle, a 17-year-old from El Cajon, with Ross second.

Despite losing what would have been his seventh win in nine races, Ross had a good night by adding 26 points to his lead over Mark Shackleford in their battle for the class championship won by Shackleford last season.

Shackleford went into the race trailing Ross by 6 points. But an early retirement due to a broken trailing arm left Shackleford 15th and he trails Ross by 32 points with three races remaining.

Robby Hornsby Jr. got his eighth win in nine starts in the Team Too Pony Stocks, taking the lead from Kevin Meador on lap 6 and finishing the 30 laps with a 1.177-second advantage over Meador. Kyle Cline stayed perfect in the Dwarf class by setting a qualifying record, winning the 4-lap Trophy Dash and winning his sixth main event by 1.53 seconds over David Quigley.

Michael Lewis of Simi Valley got his first main event win in the 40-lap contest for USAC Ford Focus Midgets and Austin Farley, a visitor from Brighton, Colo., took the 20-lap USAC Jr. Focus Midget feature.
