SAN BERNARDINO, California — Young athletes of both sexes are expected to jam Orange Show Speedway for Saturday’s (August 28) Youth Sports Night celebration, but the Old Farts will be staying home.
The popular car show presented annually by the Old Farts Racing Team has become an indirect victim of the forced cancellation of the August 21 event due to traffic and logistic problems stemming from a hip-hop concert at the neighboring National Orange Show grounds.
The show, scheduled as part of Youth Sports Night at the ASA Member Track, has been postponed indefinitely due to Saturday’s crowded event schedule, the suspension of the on-track autograph session due to extreme heat, and conflicting events on the Old Farts’ schedule.
Meanwhile, Best in the West Racing officials are in the process of finalizing the calendar changes made necessary by the August 21 cancellation.
Two of the five races affected, for the JAM Sportswear Late Models and Budweiser Legends Cars, have been rescheduled for this weekend as part of a program rounded out by the Super Late Models, Interstate Batteries Factory Fours, Dwarf Cars and Stock OHV Karts.
Any young athletes 18 and under dressed in their team uniforms, jerseys or hats will be admitted free and their parents can find a coupon good for $3 off at www.bestinthewestracing.com. In addition, admission tickets, passes and coupons for the August 21 event will be honored this week.
Spectator gates will open at 4 p.m. with the first race at 7 p.m. Tickets are priced at $10 for general admission and $8 for seniors (60 and older), students 11 to 18 and military personnel with valid identification. Children 10 and under are admitted free. A Family Pack, which includes admission for four plus a hot dog and small soft drink for each person, is priced at $45.
Parking is $5, with entry through Gate 4 off Mill Street.
Two more of the August 21 races, for the Pick-A-Part Street Stocks and M.C. Erectors Bandoleros, will be run September 4 and the fifth, a Boat Drag version of a Trailer race, has been taken off the schedule.
The other changes are the cancellation of the Demolition Derby scheduled for September 4, the switch of a Pro 4 race from this weekend to September 11, and the transfer of a Trailer race from September 11 to September 18, on a program with the Route 66 Rendezvous Burn Out contest.
