17 year old Spears SRL Driver Dallas Montes battled the high temperature and 30 other drivers to score a seventh place finish Saturday night at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale.

In only his fourth career series start, the Senior from Frontier High School in Bakersfield battled the near 100 degree heat and 30 of the best drivers on the West Coast to a well deserved top 10. The evening started out well as Montes posted the 15th best qualifying time to start the 100 lap race inside of the 8th row. " We knew the track was going to go lose so we really tried to set up the car for the long run," said Montes. "My spotter (Mike Reed) kept trying to calm me down so we wouldn't use up the tires. It worked until about lap 70 then the car got real loose and we lost some spots at the end, but overall it was a great finish."

Montes driving the MMI, Bakersfield Jam Chevrolet had the opportunity to race against another MMI sponsored car driven by fellow Bakersfield Driver Kevin Callahan. "It was a lot of fun racing Kevin. We have known each other for years from the go kart days and he was always one age class ahead of me so we never got to race against each other. We used to hang out at the track together so it is cool we are driving for the same team. I hope at Madera he can help me out because I know he has had some good runs up there."

The weekend started off kind of rough as the team searched for speed in the Friday night practice session. "We were off on Friday that is for sure," said Crew Chief Allen Montes. " We found some issues Saturday morning with the help of Bill Loe our motor builder and Junior Joiner. The team still isn't where we need to be, but we are getting closer every week. Most of our team is new to SRL racing and I really depend on Junior and Marc Lundgren from Victory Circle to help me with all the new set ups that are being used. It is hard to learn a new set up with a new driver, but we are getting close to some really good runs."

While some teams in the SRL have full time employees and almost unlimited budgets, Team MMI takes a different approach. Team Owner Steve McGowan buys good equipment in both the SRL and K&N Series and uses crew members who just enjoy racing to field the cars. " Steve gets you the stuff you need to go fast, but we do not have an open check book, said Allen. " We are getting beat by experience right now not money."

Dallas Montes would like to thank all the people who help him chase his dream. MMI, The Bakersfield Jam, Joiner Motorsports, Victory Circle, Delaney and
