2010 SEASON CHAMPIONSHIPS AT SKAGIT SPEEDWAY

ALGER, Washington — Skagit Speedway wraps up the 2010 Foothills Toyota Tundra Racing Series with the final points races of the season. ASA Member track Skagit Speedway awards championships to owners and drivers in all three Sprint car classes and to the car number in the Outlaw Hornet division. After the night racing is completed a giant Fireworks Show is planned sponsored by Axthelm Construction.

The driver championship race in the Associated Asphalt 410’s is in sight for Stanwood, WA driver Jesse Whitney. Whitney is looking to collect his third championship in the 410 division at Skagit Speedway in just 5 full seasons of racing. Whitney leads former 360 Sprint Champion Travis Jacobson by 19 points entering the season finale. Whitney and Jacobson are the only two drivers that still are in contention this late in the season.

In the Budweiser 360 Sprints Alan Munn is seeking his first ever championship after a long and distinguished career at Skagit Speedway. Munn has a 44 point lead over second place Kelsey Carpenter who has experienced some late season woes. Devin Madonia is still mathematically in the hunt but it would take a strange turn of events, like Munn not showing up for the race to give away the title to the third place car. Even though he missed a race early in the season, “Rocket” Rod Perkins from Anacortes, WA has surged back to fifth place and has an outside chance of catching Evan Funk for fourth.

The point race in the Cook Road Shell Sportsman Sprints division has been led by Bill Rude the last half of the season but lately his toughest challenge has come from former Sportsman champ Steve Parker and Matt Vandersys who has tossed up 100 point or more in four of the last six races to tighten the points lead to less than 50 points.

Going into championship night, Pull A Part Outlaw Hornet point leader Ben Gunderson is sidelined by an injury suffered at last weekends flat track motorcycle event. Gunderson will have a substitute driver in the seat trying to hold off second place running Rick Young who is just 17 points back. Young has strung together another strong season with seven second place finishes. Freddy Vela sits in third place and Tyler Ketchum and Ashley Lewellen round out the top five.

If weather should cause cancellation of the September 18th event, championship races will be rescheduled for the following weekend September 25th.

The spectator gates open at 5:45 pm with racing scheduled for 7:00 pm on Saturday night. The night of racing ends with the gigantic Axthelm Construction Season Championship Fireworks Show as an added special treat for the fans.
