
AVONDALE, Arizona — Greg Pursley broke his own track record with his qualifying time Thursday night at Phoenix International Raceway, earning the Coors Light Pole Award for Saturday night's 3 Amigos Tequila 125.
Pursley had a lap of 27.700 seconds (129.964 mph) around the 1-mile oval. His previous record lap for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West at Phoenix was 27.784 (129.571) set in April of 2009. Tom Dyer, making his third start of the season and fifth of his career, qualified at a personal-best second at 27.724 (129.851). David Mayhew was third at 27.743 (129.762).
It is Pursley's third pole of the season, tying Mayhew for most in the series. He previously posted top times at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale (Calif.) and Montana Raceway Park in Kalispell, Mont.
Dusty Davis and NASCAR K&N Pro Series East veteran Eddie MacDonald rounded out the top five. Davis is making his second career start and MacDonald his first West race. Davis' teammate, Justin Johnson, is also making his second career start and qualified sixth. He was followed by Michael Waltrip, Matt Crafton, Brennan Newberry and Ty Dillon.
Crafton practiced and qualified the car for Stan Silva Jr., who will be in the car for Saturday's season finale. The 3 Amigos Tequila 125 is scheduled to start Saturday at 6 p.m. MT.
