Atwater’s Kenny Shepherd won a $3,345.00 paycheck by beating out 83 other teams in competition, but this time it was in a speeding bass boat and not in a race car. In fact it was the U.S. Anglers Choice Region 7 event held at Lake McClure this past Saturday February 12th that Shepherd and his partner John Braziel won.
Kenny Shepherd raced NASCAR regional tours all over the Western United States from the early nineties until he retired in 2007 after finishing 9th at the Infineon Raceway while driving his Save Mart / Mountain Dew race car. His reason for retiring was to focus on operating the local based race tracks located in the cities of Madera and Chowchilla.
After driving for so many years with names branded on his cars like America Online, Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Kleenex, Save Mart, and Frito-Lay, he quietly began competing in bass fishing tournaments in 2008, with 2009 being his first fulltime season.
“By 2008 I was starving for competition, and my love of bass fishing that my Grandfather passed on to me combined with my hunger for competition seamed to guide me right into the regional bass fishing scene. NASCAR racing and tournament bass fishing have a lot in common so it was a perfect fit for me. Last year my team partner James Burkhart and I came very close to winning several times, but this past weekend my new partner and I finally got it done, and against 83 other very tough teams” Kenny Shepherd.
Kenny’s 2011 fishing partner is a gentleman named John Braziel. “One of my favorite race car drivers was Johnny Brazil, former Super Modified great, and my new fishing partner has the same name even though it is spelled different, so I can always say I got my first big bass fishing tournament win with John Braziel on my boat” Kenny Shepherd.
