The S2 division is set to start its 3rd season at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale in 2011. The class came to life in 2009 as a brand new division and in 2010 had a consistent field of drivers. This next year is looking to be another great season for the S2 class.
Often times people will read racing press releases and remain on the spectator side of the fence, but maybe YOU are looking to get started in racing, or move up to a division…but which one is suited for you? Several drivers have used the S2 class as a starter division to the ½ mile at Toyota Speedway, and this year there will be more working their way up the ranks including Trevor Huddleston from the bandoleros. Ryan Reed used the S2 division to transition from Legend cars to being a fierce competitor in the Super Late Models.
Randel King won the inaugural S2 championship in 2009, and speaks very highly of the cars and division. “The competition in this class is second to none… every car along with every chassis component is built by one manufacturer that creates a spec class. I would definitely say this is the ideal class for drivers trying to conquer larger tracks and gain experience racing on the half mile. The speeds are perfect and the competition is close so it could definitely prepare anyone.”
King says the division is perfect for anyone! “I would definitely recommend [the S2 division] for drivers that consider themselves familiar with the concept and basics of racing, along with previous experience in something such as a bandolero or a legend car. It’s the perfect stepping stone for drivers stepping into a stock car for the first time. I would also recommend this class for the hobby racers out there! If you are looking for a class that is well structured, easy on the wallet, and a blast racing side by side with competitors, then this is the class for you!”
Dylan Lupton, the 2010 S2 champion, also shared his thoughts on how the division helps prepare drivers for higher divisions. Lupton came directly from racing karts on a national level to the S2 class and said it wasn’t the easiest transition to master, taking him about half the season to get used to the car. Now in 2011, Lupton will be advancing to the late model class at Toyota Speedway with a few races already under his belt. He went on to say “the S2 car made my transition to late models easy. It gave me good car control and a foundation for future racing in higher levels.”
The S2 cars are built exclusively at Race Car Factory. High Point Racing runs a NASCAR entry level driving program, and in 2010 swept the top 3 positions in the championship. For more information and details, contact highpointracing.com.
