PETTY ON POLE, KANKE INJURED

Veteran roadcourse ace Steve Petty was the fastest of the 50 drivers that took the green at Sears Point Raceway for qualifying for Saturday's Snap-on 200, the 8th of 18 NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Touring events.

Series point leader M K Kanke is listed as the sixth fastest qualifier, but was going into turn one when according to a bystander, "It looked like something let go and appeared the tires hit fluid and he looped it around sideways into the dirt runoff and straight into the concrete retaining wall." Kanke is reported to have a possible broken femur. He was transported to Sonoma Valley Hospital 347 Andrieux St. Sonoma, CA 95476 and listed in stable condition.

The top-ten qualifiers:
No. 01 Steve Petty
No. 63 Eric Holmes
No. 70 Greg Pursley
No. 20 Jimmy Inglebright
No. 2 Craig Raudman
No. 9 Kenny Shepherd
No. 15 David Pook
No. Rudy Revak
No. 86 Greg Pickett

Editor's note: There was a correction to positions 6-10 from the original post. In an official NASCAR Release stated: Veteran Featherlite Southwest Series, NASCAR Touring competitor and current point leader M.K. Kanke of Frazier Park, Calif., was involved in a single car crash during qualifying while leading the qualifying times. Kanke's qualifying time was sixth fastest overall, though the team has withdrawn the entry for this event.
