Sonoma, Calif. (June 21) Veteran road course ace Steve Petty won the Bud Pole Award for the SNAP-ON TOOLS "200" for the Featherlite Southwest Series, NASCAR Touring event to be held at the picturesque two-mile circuit Saturday, June 23.
Petty was one of ten cars in the last group to attempt to qualify in the European style 15-minute qualifying session. Petty's mark of 1:16.792/93.760 mph establishes a new track record on the recently reconfigured layout.
Following Petty was Eric Holmes, Greg Pursley, last year's winner Jim Inglebright, and Craig Raudman rounding out the top five. Qualifying 6-10 were Kenny Shepherd, David Pook, Rudy Revak, Greg Pickett, and in tenth Rookie Burney Lamar.
FSWS current point leader M.K. Kanke of Frazier Park, Calif., was involved in a single car crash during qualifying while leading the qualifying times. Kanke was taken to the track's Sutter Health Infield Care Center for preliminary treatment of a broken right leg. Kanke was alert, awake, and in stable condition when transported by ambulance to Sonoma Valley for further evaluation. Kanke's qualifying time was sixth fastest, though the team has withdrawn the entry for the event.
