6 minutes to the airport. 1 hour and 30 minute flight. 20 minutes to the track. These were the numbers that Brandon “Superman” Davis was counting on to make it to Toyota Speedway at Irwindale on time for qualifying. Did he make it!?
He sure did! The driver of the #55 High Point Racing Late Model was also behind the wheel of his K&N Pro series car at Miller Motorsports Park where he competed in the event in Tooele, Utah, near Salt Lake City. The race was plagued with late race cautions, and on a 2.2 mile road course, any caution is a lengthy one. Things were initially looking bleak for the effort when the track was covered in snow just hours before the race, but lucky for Davis things cleared up and racing went on as scheduled. After a solid drive, Brandon was caught up in a wreck during one of the green-white-checkered runs. The car needed a rollback, and Davis needed to jet!
The talk of Brandon’s progress to the track was buzzing around the pits and the stands at Irwindale. Qualifying for the Auto Club Late Models took place after the first race, and within 5 minutes of the #55 being up to qualify, the call was made over the official’s radio, “Driver 55 has arrived.” Qualifying order is set by reverse points, and it really paid off for Davis on this night. He qualified 3rd.
Fast forward to race time where a 4 car invert put the 55 on the front row alongside HPR teammate Dylan Lupton. Once the green flag fell, Lupton held the lead for a while, but Davis came charging up and did his usual dance; pulling away from the pack. The race was competitive and tight for 2nd on back, with contact throughout the race, but only one caution on lap 15. Brandon went on to win his 4th race in a row and increase his points lead. If he can keep this consistency up, the rest of the competitors going for National Points better watch out.
It should be noted that the question “Will you marry me?” remains on the hood. For more information on Brandon Davis and High Point Racing, please visit www.highpointracing.com.
