Since April 2nd, every race that Brandon “Superman” Davis has entered has ended with him in victory lane. He continued his winning streak at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale on May 14th in his High Point Racing machine, picking up his 5th win in a row in the Auto Club Late Model division.
With qualifying late in the evening, the trick for the late model drivers was to translate a good setup from practice earlier in the day. With cloud covering the speedway, and temperatures in the high 60s, Davis put down some fast times during the practice sessions. The fast pace in practice transitioned over to a pole run in qualifying, beating out HPR team owner Tim Huddleston by a mere 4 thousandths of a second. With no invert, success was visible early for the #55.
Temperatures fell further into the night and a light breeze cooled the track even more. The green flag waved at approximately 8:25pm, and Davis made a quick jump to the front ahead of Huddleston. The late models were given 50 laps to duel it out, and with only one caution mid-race, the race finished up in 23 minutes. Throughout the race, Brandon Davis did nothing but look forward and pull away from his closest competition, while lapping several cars in the process. He was also the only driver to put down a lap in the 18 second bracket throughout the race. By the time he crossed the line, “Superman” was 1.4 seconds ahead of 2nd place Chris Holloway. Davis climbed out of the car and gave a fist pump to the crowd.
With the success that Brandon Davis has had in Toyota Speedway’s feature division, the driver is looking to be a strong contender for the National Points title this year. The National Points championship is determined from a drivers best 18 finishes, with maximum points given when there is a field of at least 20 cars. Toyota Speedway has been having strong car counts in the feature division with respect to tracks across the nation, and Davis’ efforts are certainly making noise. He sits in the points lead for the Auto Club Late Model division with a healthy buffer between himself and second place.
Superman’s next race in the late models is May 21st (Armed Forces Appreciation Night, $1 Hot Dogs, $2 Beers), as the ACLMs have three race weekends in a row at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale.
