LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Jim Pettit II raced to his fifth ‘Bullring’ podium Saturday night during the StreamPayForViewTV – ‘Blackjack 121’ on the Las Vegas Motor Speedways third mile oval. The event was the third race of the current season for the SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour Series.
"Both my guys and myself are really motivated right now, so we’ll be getting the car ready for the next race at Stockton 99 Speedway next month, and go from there."— Jim Pettit II
The Prunedale, CA., driver started out the night qualifying in the number one position. He then drew the ‘eight ball’ for the invert starting him eighth in the twenty-two car field. A third of the way through the 121 lap event, he was fourth, and on lap eighty-two, moved into second. However, he was passed by his friend and rival, M K Kanke, with two laps to go to wind up third.
“Overall, it was a good night,” said Pettit. “We didn’t practice on Friday, but got a good set-up on the car during Saturdays practice, went out and set fast time and got a podium finish. So it was a good night for us.”
His third place finish was his second of the year at the ‘Bullring’, having finished second, to Kanke, in the seasons opener on April 2nd. His other top three finishes came in 2008, when he won the SRL championship, and last year when he had first and second place finishes. In his two appearances there in 2009 he finished 19th, when a motor expired and his car caught fire, and a fourth. “Except for that one time, we’ve had some pretty good luck in Vegas.”
Although there has been some speculation as to whether or not Pettit will run the full SRL season, following the Saturday night race, he said, “Both my guys and myself are really motivated right now, so we’ll be getting the car ready for the next race at Stockton 99 Speedway next month, and go from there.”
