CHARLOTTE, N — C. (May 25, 2011) – The third annual King’s Cup – Karting for a Cause presented by Best Buy provided some early-week racing excitement for fans visiting the Charlotte area for the upcoming Coca-Cola 600. In the end, the team sponsored by Stanley bested 25 other teams to take home the coveted hardware.
As in last year’s event, the King’s Cup featured two qualifying heat races that determined the field for the main event. Each heat race was set for one hour. “The King” Richard Petty began the festivities by waving the green flag to begin the first heat race. The team sponsored by the Dale Jr. Foundation won the first heat race by averaging a lap of 42.358 seconds over the .333-mile course. Teams sponsored by Front Row Motorsports and the Coca-Cola Corporation rounded out the podium.
The second heat race was won by the team sponsored by SunTrust. Their average lap time of 40.910 seconds was easily the fastest average time of the heats. The Stanley team and the team sponsored by the Martin Truex Jr, Foundation finished in second and third, respectively.
15 teams lined up for the main event, which was also set at a one-hour time limit. In what will go down as one of the most-exciting races during the Charlotte race weeks, the Stanley team proved too tough to beat as they crossed the finish line ahead of Front Row Motorsports and SunTrust, respectively. It’s the second-consecutive year that the Stanley team has visited Victory Lane at Victory Lane Indoor Karting as winners of the King’s Cup.
“What a great race, a great way to end an outstanding event,” stated former Paralyzed Veterans national president Randy Pleva. “Congratulations to the Stanley team for winning again this year. This event just seems to grow year after year. I’m blown away by the support we receive from the NASCAR and Charlotte communities. It really means a lot to all of the members of the Paralyzed Veterans of America.
