DAYTONA BEACH, Florida — No matter what sport you follow, the early part of any season will have a question mark as to who will be at the top at the end. In auto racing, a driver may have a great start while some shine later in the season. Or it may be one bad night that can hurt if you are not consistent.
In the second week of the Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil ASA Member Track National Championship standings, there are many local stars at the ASA Member Tracks taking advantage of their early success this season. Will they continue to stay in the spotlight or will they be taken over by another competitor at their track?
This week, the driver at the top of the standings is Jason York of Ace Speedway in Altamahaw, NC. York has the highest average among the track point leaders with 0.8495. York is currently in a tight points battle in the Late Model standings as he holds a six-point lead over Barry Beggarly and an eight-point lead over Rodney Cook. In fact, 20 points separate the top-five in the standings.
Tyler Whetstone, who leads the Maverik Modifieds points at Rocky Mountain Raceways in West Valley City, UT, is third overall with 0.7310. Whetstone currently holds an 11-point lead over Jason Aposhian and a 50-point lead over Michael Hale in the track point point standings.
Lebanon I-44 Speedway in Lebanon, MO has the top-five separated by 55 points. Ken Dickinson and Chrissy Wallace share the ASA Late Model point lead going into this weekend. Dickinson is fourth overall among the ASA Member Track point leaders with an average of 0.6692 while Wallace is sixth overall with an average of 0.5556. What is interesting to note is that Mike Slone, who is fifth in the standings at I-44 Speedway has the highest average among all drivers with a 0.9735. If Slone were leading in the track standings, he would be the overall leader in the National Championship this week. Remember in order to be the National Champion; you need to win the 2011 track championship at your track first.
Chad Finchum is fifth overall with an average of 0.6097. The current point leader in the Late Model Sportsman division at Newport Motor Speedway in Newport, TN finds himself in a tight points battle. He currently has a six-point lead over David Flynn and a seven-point lead over Wayne Webb. 18 points separate the top-five at Newport.
Ryan Stiltner currently leads the Charger division standings at Lonesome Pine Raceway in Coeburn, VA. He is sixth overall in the National standings with an average of 0.5379.
Stiltner currently has a 16-point lead over Steve Sims and a 30-point lead over Kevin Wolfe in the track standings.
Mark Mackesy started his 2011 season on a high note by winning the season opener at State Park Speedway in Wausau, WI. He enters the National standings in seventh overall with an average of 0.5302.
Mark Shackelford has a two-point lead over Jon Manke and a six-point lead over Matt Hicks and Rob Kiemele in the Super Late Model standings at Orange Show Speedway in San Bernardino, CA. Shackleford has an average of 0.3753 in the National standings.
"The interest in the Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil ASA Member Track National Championship is growing at our ASA Member Tracks," Dennis Huth, ASA President said. "Competitors are already keeping an eye on where they are in the National standings as they continue to race weekly. We want the tight point battles at our ASA Member Tracks that goes along with the tight side-by-side racing that race fans will see every weekend. We still have a long ways to go before crowning our 2011 National Champion and inviting them to tryout with Joe Gibbs Racing. This will be interesting to watch as the season goes further along."
Drivers from participating ASA Member Tracks across the United States have chosen one of their divisions as their premiere divisions. Those drivers in the premiere division, who are ASA members in good standing, will compete at their ASA Member Track to first win their track championship. Once they accomplish that goal, they will then be matched up against the other premiere division champions to determine the National Champion.
ASA has once again teamed up with speednetdirect.com to create a proprietary point system that is much like a batting average in baseball. Some of those factors used to create an average are wins, number of cars passed, finishes, car count, and number of events. No one knows what has more of a factor over another.
Race fans and competitors can follow the standings on www.speednetdirect.com. The opening page will show who are the current track point leaders who would be eligible for the National Championship if it ended today. The East and West Region standings gives a complete listing of all of the drivers participating this season.
