After an opening day set back, Jason Patison Racing has been gaining momentum every time they hit the track at Toyota Speedway. Coming off back-to-back 3rd place finishes in the NASCAR Whelen Super Late Model Series, Patison and crew rolled into Irwindale CA, with a well prepared car and it showed from the get go.
"Jason Patison is just 14 points out of the top spot in the 2011 championship standings."
Patison posted the fastest time during the day’s practice sessions and backed it up in qualifying, posting a lap time of 17.71, putting his number 17 machine on the pole. Officials opted for a 4 car invert, this put Patison on the outside of row 2 for the start of the 75 lap main event. When the green flag dropped Patison began to battle 2nd starter Kevin Thompson, after 10 laps of hard side by side racing, Patison finally cleared Thompson coming out of turn 4. Unfortunately, while Patison and Thompson battled for 2nd, Rod Johnson Jr">Rod Johnson Jr. went uncontested and stretched a straight away lead on the rest of the field. Astonishingly the entire 75 lap race went caution free, Patison was able to cut Johnson’s lead in half by the time the checkered flag fell but was never able to catch the race winner.
“We really needed a caution tonight, we had a great car but Johnson just got too big a lead while we were racing with Thompson,” said Patison during post race interviews.
The second place finish narrowed the points gap, putting Patison just 14 points out of the top spot in the 2011 championship standings with 6 races to go.
