WESTERN SPEEDWAY -- THEY ARE RACING THIS WEEKEND!

There will be two big nights of Sprint Car Action at Western Speedway this weekend, both Friday and Saturday night’s will see the Winged Warriors of WILROC and NSRA battle it out on the fast 4/10ths paved oval for the Strawberry Cup presented by Richloch Rentals. The WILROC Non Winged Sprint Cars and the (OTRA) Old Time Racing Association will also see action both night’s.

Heading into this weekends action for the annual Strawberry Cup event, there will be five former champions represented for a total of seven victories. Leading the way in wins are upland drivers Scott Auman from Duncan and Jeff Bird form Shawnigan Lake with two wins each, single wins go to three Victoria drivers, Jeff Montgomery, Matt Mansell and Randy Vincent. Leading the way for the out of town drivers is Meridian, Idaho’s Sierra Jackson who will be looking for her first Strawberry Cup victory, Jackson is coming off a NSRA feature win at Meridian Speedway last weekend. Other off island driver’s include, Richie Larson from Quesnel, and Marv Barcelo from Spruce Grove, Alberta. Other local drivers expected to compete are Chris Schmelze in the Washington based Monte Zema sprinter, Rob Scott, Darren Yates, Cam McLean and Marty Venoit.

Jessie Dardengo who is the current point’s leader in the WILROC Non Winged Sprint Lites, will be looking to make it two wins in a row after dominating at the season opener on May 21st. Dardengo leads Guy Barrett by 4 points 112 to 108, Robbie Haslam is a close third with 106 points, followed by Chris Root at 104 and Richard Lejeune with 95. The rest of the top ten in order are Ryan Wade, Daryl Morneau, Steven Dardengo, Rin French and Wayde Heckford.

The Old Time Racing Association will also make its second start of the year. These unique cars are steel bodied vintage cars from the years 1928 to 1040. The action should be great as George Jenson looks to make it two victories in a row after winning the Jim and Lorraine Haslam Memorial at the opener, Jenson will have tough competition as he will have to fend off the challenges of Larry Joyce, Tom Cinnamon and James Campbell for the win.

The front gates open will open both days at 5:00 pm, qualifying at 6:00 and racing at 7:00 pm.
