Davis put his No. 10 Applied Computer Solutions Ford Fusion on the pole for the K & N Pro Series West race at Infineon, marking his first pole in the series beating out NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers Joey Logano and David Gilliland, who rounded out the top three, respectively.
Logano was able to get in front of Davis a few laps into the race, but Davis remained on Logano’s back bumper as they pulled away from Gilliland who was in third place. Only 19 laps into the race, Davis’ car was pulled to the side due to engine problems.
“We aren’t sure what happened to the motor. It just let go. The temps were all normal and the RPMs were still relatively low,” said Davis. “I guess it’s just one of those racing things.” This was the first K & N Pro Series West race where Davis was retired early due to engine complications.
After debriefing with his Crew Chief, Davis flew to Southern California to compete in his High Point Racing Late Model at Toyota Irwindale Speedway. Without any practice, Davis hopped into the No. 55 Applied Computer Solutions machine and ticked off two qualifying laps. Davis’ blistering lap of 18.443 was not only quick enough to send him to the top of the board, but also broke the standing track record.
“It was a great to rebound from my earlier luck at Infineon. Breaking the track record at Irwindale just hours later in the day felt great,” said Davis. “The lack of practice time I had this weekend to set up the car speaks to the dedication and preparation of the High Point Racing Team. They were ready.”
Davis started inside the third row after NASCAR officials inverted the top-five. Davis settled into fourth position until lap 13 when the yellow flag came out for the first time of the night. After the restart, Davis worked quickly to get to second where he took some looks at the inside of teammate Nik Romano. When cars collided in turns 3 and 4 with only three laps to go, another yellow as thrown. Davis took full advantage of the yellow and with two laps to go he took the lead and held on for his 6th win of the 2011 season.
“On the Late Model side, we haven’t been finishing where we’d like,” said Davis. “I really feel great for the crew and everyone that works on the car because I know how badly they have wanted to return to victory lane. ”
Davis returns to Irwindale July 2nd in his K & N Pro Series West car. For more information please visit www.BrandonDavis.com, www.highpointracing.com or www.racingwest.com.
