West Valley City, Utah-. Spears SRL Southwest Tour racer Jacob Gomes, from Manteca, California pulled out a win Saturday night at Rocky Mountain Raceways, an ASA Member Track, racing against 2009 Spears SRL Southwest Tour Champion M.K. Kanke at the Century Boatland 115. This is Gomes third win of the 2011 SRL Southwest Tour Season.
Starting in the second position, Gomes managed to keep his spot in the top 4 for the remainder of the race; securing his first place finish by lap forty-seven. In dominating fashion, Kanke presented Gomes with steep competition as he worked his way up to the front of the line after starting the intense race in the back row.
#26 Derek Thorn drove hard to catch the battling rookie and veteran, outlasting other challengers to take a third place finish. #03 Jim Pettit II finished fourth and #37 Keith Sprangler rounded out the top 5.
“Kanke and I battled for a long time. He is a witty driver. I ran the race, didn’t look back and drove as hard as I could,” says eighteen year-old Gomes of his victory over Kanke.
The Century Boatland 115 marks the mid-way point in the Spears SRL Southwest Tour Series. Competitors compete from six states around the country including: California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Washington and Maryland.
