DAYTONA BEACH, Florida — Iowa Speedway in Newton, IA will welcome the ASA Midwest Tour Super Late Models on Friday, August 5 for the Sandvik Coromant 150 presented by ClineTool. This will be the third time that the Midwest stars will visit the Rusty Wallace designed 7/8-mile facility located east of Des Moines, IA.
“We are excited about ASA coming to Iowa Speedway. We have had a very good relationship with the people from ASA,” Conrad Clement, Iowa Speedway’s new majority owner said. “The ASA Midwest Tour has been absent for over a year and the fans are looking forward to their event on Friday night.”
Clement said that one of the main reasons for welcoming back the ASA Midwest Tour was because of the fans, “We had a positive reaction from the fans, and we are looking ahead to future events with ASA,” Clement said. “I have been having conversations with my good friend Dennis Huth (ASA President) and we will see how everything works out. The racing that the ASA Midwest Tour has presented in 2008 & 2009 were some of the best races we have seen at Iowa Speedway. We are excited to have them back in 2011 and hopefully beyond.”
The last time the ASA Midwest Tour appeared was in 2009 with Tim Schendel and Jonathan Eilen putting on a great side-by-side battle for the lead in the final ten laps. That was until Chris Wimmer went by both of them on the frontstretch with three laps to go and pulled away to his first ASA Midwest Tour win in front of a huge crowd.
Clement along with his family recently purchased the majority ownership of Iowa Speedway. His friendship with the ASA President goes back nearly 20 years as they worked together when Huth worked for NASCAR and Clement owned Featherlite Trailers. “We have a good relationship, and have had since the early 1990’s.” Clement said.
Clement has some great long-term goals including more events for the fans. “We have a great track. Rusty Wallace (1983 ASA Champion) did an awesome job designing the track,” Clement exclaimed. “The drivers love it, the fans love it and the sanctioning bodies love it. There is a lot of good side-by-side racing here at Iowa Speedway.”
“Conrad is a long time friend and I am excited that he is taking on this new venture with Iowa Speedway,” Dennis Huth, ASA President said. “Clement is right when he said that Rusty Wallace did an awesome job of designing this track. We look forward to working on future events between ASA and Iowa Speedway.”
The ASA Midwest Tour will qualify at 3:15pm. Fans will have an opportunity to meet the ASA Midwest Tour drivers at an autograph session from 5:30-6:30pm. Green flag drops at 8:00pm.
