TOP OPEN-WHEELERS RACE MERIDIAN TO HELP ONE OF THEIR OWN

MERIDIAN, Idaho — Winged sprintcar racers return to ASA-sanctioned Meridian Speedway with a vengeance and purpose Saturday night.

The Mtn. Dew Winged Sprintcar division makes its first appearance at the historic paved quarter-mile in seven weeks, but there’s more on the drivers’ minds than the points race.

Drivers, such as series leader Sierra Jackson of Middleton, Idaho, take to the track for the Jeff Russell Road to Recovery Benefit Race, with part of the proceeds from Saturday’s gate receipts going to help the Boise, Idaho, veteran racer recover from injuries suffered during an open-wheel racing accident in Las Vegas last fall.

Other racers not in the Meridian points race this season may strap into a racecar to run in honor of Russell, including Kenny Hamilton, who is rumored to be bringing his Pink Lady sprintcar out for the event.

Other divisions racing Saturday night include the ESI Express ASA Modifieds, the Edmark Mini Stocks and Tates Rents Hornets. Nampa, Idaho’s Shelby Stroebel, who leads the local Modifieds standings, crept back into third place in the Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil ASA Member Track National Championship race in the latest standings released Aug. 24.

Gates open at 4 p.m. with racing at 6:30 p.m.

Admission is $12 for adults, $9.50 for senior citizens and military personnel with ID, $8 for ages 7-11 and children 6-and-under free. A family pass good for two adults and up to four children ages 7-11 is available for $36.

Fans can buy tickets online at www.meridianspeedway.com, print them off at home and avoid the long lines on race night.
