MONROE, Washington — Naima Lang won the 1st Annual Mark Galloway Hot August Night Shootout for Super Late Models at Evergreen Speedway on Saturday August 27. The 125-lap feature on the BIG 5/8-mile paved oval put Lang back on the podium for the 11th time this season. By virtue of the win Lang also won the four race ‘Big West Series’ and took home the 6 foot trophy. The Northwest Legends Series winner was Bob Kronenberg. Mike Middleton won the Stinger 8 main and ‘Crashin’ Kenny Bates won the Extreme V-8 main. The Evergreen State Fair race crowd enjoyed a great night of racing in the clear warm weather.
"Using cunning moves through traffic at the dreaded X, Middleton garnered the winner’s trophy and the accolades of the crowd."
Lang who had a 8 in a row win streak end two weeks ago won his 11th of the season in 14 starts. Taking the lead for good with 50 to go in the 125-lap main on the BIG track, Lang pulled out to a sizeable win. Gary Lewis and Lang had the fans on their feet as the two swapped the lead and some great side by side racing. The restarts after cautions had everyone gasping on which one would choose the inside or out on the commitment cone restarts. The final restart with 55 to go Lang decided to take the outside lane and Lewis decided to go inside. That is all Lang needed to pull away. Lewis then struggled with handling problems and fell to third well behind second place finisher Daniel Moore.
Kronenberg won the NW Legends main from the front row and never was challenged. Kronenberg spent the 2008 and 2009 seasons on the National Masters Legend’s tour and won championships. Kronenberg, who now runs periodically after traveling over 150,000 mile during the tour years, looked as good as ever. Jon VanGeesen finished second with Roger Drake directly behind.
Middleton who normally races in the Super Figure Eight division made a cameo appearance in the Stinger 8 main in a car he used to drive. Using cunning moves through traffic at the dreaded X, Middleton garnered the winner’s trophy and the accolades of the crowd. Josh Young was second and Melissa Repin third.
The Extreme V-8 main was to be one run in the normal counterclockwise direction and the second half in reverse also counterclockwise. Well everything was good until the half way point. Leader Bates should have then turned and gone in reverse. What he did was turn and go clockwise but forward. The problem was then compounded when the rest of the racers followed him. So at the end Bates was declared the winner since everyone did the same. Bates has gained a new nickname ‘wrong way’ Kenny Bates. The crowd laughed and so did Bates as he left the track in reverse.
