ALGER, Washington — World of Outlaw Sprint Series action, had Craig Dollansky of Elk River, MN, powering the Quiring, Big Game Tree Stands #7, 410 Sprint into the lead with just nine laps to go, in the opening night race at Skagit Speedway in Alger, WA. It was the winning move of the event as Dollansky went on to score, yet another victory, bringing his total this season to eight WoO Sprint car wins.
"We had a good start tonight. We had quick time in qualifying."
"We had a good start tonight. We had quick time in qualifying (Dollansky posted a 11.388 second lap). The track condition was good. We could run the top and the bottom. The track was pretty decent. There was a lot of passing. He (Jason Meyers) was running a good race. It took a long time racing to get there. I caught him (Meyers) in lap traffic and made the pass. (Dollansky was racing the very top edge of the edge of the track in the second turn, when he passed Meyers.) We'd just got a good run at him (Meyers). It was a good run for us and I couldn't be happier." said Dollansky.
Meyer's of Clovis, CA, is the current points leader in the race for the 2011 Championship Points Race as well as the reigning Champion, after winning his first WoO Sprint title in 2010. Meyer's driving the Elite, DDNI/GLR Investments, #14 sprint, raced into the lead on the opening lap of this thirty lap race. Meyers looked strong and seemed to have the advantage, as he raced away from the field. With the first lap in the books, it was Meyers, Jason Sides (TN), Dollansky, Brad Sweet (CA), Travis Jacobson (WA), Steve Kinser (IN), Donny Schatz (ND), Paul McMahan (TN), Sam Hafertepe, Jr., and Trey Starks (WA), racing in the top ten of the hefty competition running on this three-tenths of a mile, high banked dirt oval.
In spite of red and caution flags, Meyer's was able to keep the lead, holding all challengers at bay for twenty-one laps. Dollansky was racing in third when he made his daring move at the top edge of the track and took over the lead, passing both Meyer's and Sides. From that point on, Dollansky dominated the final nine laps, to earn the win and his $8,000. winning purse.
"I just got beat. Craig (Dollansky) got on the top edge and beat me out of the turn, to take the lead. I was kind of being a little cautious, racing a bit lower from the top, because of the points, you just don't want to make a mistake. My car seemed to get a little tight towards the end. He (Dollansky) had a really good car. The track was good. We could race the top and the bottom. The straight-a-ways seemed a bit rough in places and I don't know why." said Meyers.
There was lots of speed for the front runners and Steve Kinser of Bloomington, IN, racing the Tony Stewart Racing, Bass Pro Shops #11was among them having started the race in sixth. With less than a handful of laps to go, S. Kinser reeled in third place, taking his place on the podium.
"We lacked the chance of getting laps in, to know what your car could do (referring to the multiple red and yellow flags that flew out from the first lap and played a big part, in this race). It seemed we would go forward a couple and then go back. I didn't know what was going to happen. I can't complain, I had a good run tonight." said S. Kinser.
Early on, this race was a race of survival, that started on the opening lap when Cody Darrah (PA) got upside down, racing out of the second turn, right after the initial green flag flew out. Darrah, driving the Kasey Kahne, Great Clips, #91, in his "Rookie" year, has shown his driving ability throughout the season and just recently claimed his WoO Sprint Series win at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton, Alberta (CAN) (09/27/2011).
Lucas Wolfe (PA) got caught up in this red flag, but only went into a spin to avoid Darrah. Darrah's sprint was tore up enough to have to side line for the night. It was reported that Darrah was okay. Wolfe, restarted at the rear of the field, having lost twelve valuable positions.
With only six laps scored, a second red flag flew out when Jonathan Allard (CA) and Jason Solwold (WA), made contact as they raced into the fourth turn, with both of them rolling their Sprints. Both sustained too much damage to their cars to be able to return to the race. The first caution flew out on the next lap when Toni Lutar (CAN) and Austen Wheatley (WA) also got together and spun out, racing out of the second turn. On this same lap, the second caution flew when Kraig Kinser (IN) and Jason Solwold (WA) got together, spinning out, also in the second turn. Four more laps scored when Loren Forler (WA) crashed into the first turn wall. The next lap had Tim Kaeding (CA) crashing and rolling into the wall, mid-way through the third and fourth turns. None of the drivers were reported injured.
Why so many incidents in just the front twelve laps, is a mystery. There was a lot of dust but it became heavier as the race went on. For myself and the fans, it was a hard race to watch, due to the heavy dust. But the driver's I spoke to, said that, for them, it just goes along with dirt track racing. There was a final red flag on the 12th lap, but it was to give the drivers a chance to refuel, after so many flags had flown.
Fourth place was picked up by Sides, followed by McMahan, Jacobson, Schatz, Sweet, Kerry Madsen (AUS), Chad Kemenah (OH), Wolfe (PA), Sammy Swindell (TN), Jesse Whitney (WA), Lutar, Bill Rose (IN), Wheatley, Kraig Kinser (IN), Starks , Logan Forler (WA), Kaeding, Hafertepe, Allard, Solwold and Darrah.
At the checkered flag, only twelve sprints were on the lead lap.
