Time to get ready to rumble! It just doesn't get much better than this. Kevin Vernon is going for his 4th Mesa Marin Raceway championship. He will need to finish 11 places ahead of current points leader Mike Alsup. Vernon went into last week's event the point's leader but contact in the trophy dash between Alsup and him had him rolling out his back-up car. You can bet he will have two cars ready for competition. Vernon has 7 wins, 4 poles.

Alsup, who used to run the NASCAR Southwest Series, is looking at a 1999 Mesa Marin track championship, this would be a first for him. Alsup has fewer wins and poles than Vernon with 3 wins, 2 poles but he has 3 more top fives.

Michael Duncan ran one heck of a race last week coming back twice during the 100 to finish 5th, but he will have to have the gods on his side to have a shot at the championship. It will take real bad luck for Alsup and Vernon early in the race in order for Duncan to have a chance, but mathematically he is still in the hunt, it could still happen.

In the other divisions racing this weekend, defending champ Danny Collins seems to have won the Modified Stocks. This is #2 for Danny. Meanwhile, Mike Alexander appears to have won the Street Stocks. This is his first. The 911 and Campus Motorsports is a semi-final. CHP and North High are leaders respectively.

Jerry Cain, NASCAR Winston West driver, will do a special presentation at the beginning of the races. He will be presenting a unique kids car that was won during the Memorial Day race sponsored by Forum Marketing.

But the story this week is the battle of the champions. You can bet they are going to race hard. Rumors have been flying, people are talking, fans are coming out to cheer their favorite drivers on. Who will be crowned the champion? Will it be Alsup? Will it be Vernon? Or does the dark horse Duncan have a shot when these two race hard? As stated earlier...racing just doesn't get much better than this.####
