The point season for the late model sportsman competitors at Cajon Speedway concludes this Saturday night. Gary Tamborelli is clearly in the driver's seat to claim his third consecutive championship, but Eric Ferguson still has a very slim mathematical chance at overtaking his Escondido rival.
A 40-lap main event will be on tap with double points on the line. Should a driver have fast time and win the Grand Prix, he will earn 105 points. So with the top two drivers separated by 79 markers, Ferguson could still overhaul Tamborelli and deny him the title. Race time is 7:05 P.M. Sharing the 3/8 mile paved oval will be the Grand American modifieds, street stocks, and pony stocks. Those divisions, along with the bomber stocks, will end their point season September 25. This weekend's race will not be the final race of the season for the late model sportsman. They will return for their annual fall Coors 100 open competition race on October 2.
All Tamborelli needs to do is finish 19th or better to lay claim to the title. That task should be simple because Cajon never starts more than 20 cars in their main event. But while the task is simple for Tamborelli, the scenarios are endless for the remaining drivers in the top ten. Virtually no one is assured of his position in the top ten. Tamborelli has 933 points while Ferguson has 854. Jerry Gay sits in third place with 813 points. Rounding out the top five are John Tyczki Jr with 775 and Todd McLauchlan with 760. The second five include rookie Don Kerr (669), Arnie Fry (654), rookie Jeff Wright (612), Rich Green Jr.(590), and Russ Gregson (472).
In the street stocks Danny Gay is already home free after winning for the eighth time last weekend. The pony stocks could see their champion crowned. Rob Overman is trying to become the eleventh different driver in as many years to win that division's first place trophy. Overman sits 58 markers ahead of last year's champ Ed Hale and needs to be 63 tallies ahead after this weekend to eliminate Hale from title contention.
The modifieds is the tightest battle. Lance Biggers sets the pace. He is just ten points ahead of Bo Lemler while defending champion Jimmy Dickerson sits in third. Biggers will be unable to clinch this weekend. So the battle in the Cajon's open wheeled division will definitely go down to the last point race of the season on September 25.
