Las Vegas' Kurt Busch passed Mike Duncan at the line to win the Chris Trickle Twin 70s Late Model Open Comp event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway's 3/8-mile paved oval Saturday night. Busch, who qualified third in the No. 26 Quality Mechanical Chevrolet, went to the inside of Duncan coming out of turn four to take the checkered flag inches ahead of the polesitter. He received $5,000 for the victory. "At the start of the second half, we fell back a couple of positions. My crew told me to keep it cool because these Late Models will do that to you," said Busch, the 1999 NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Series Champion. "We just kept picking them off and then led the last one. That is the only lap that counts. At least, I think it is." Duncan started on the pole and led 169 of 170 laps. He was awarded a $1,000 check from Lakewood Plumbing for leading at the halfway mark. "It is heartbreaking," said Duncan. "But I have to thank the man upstairs for letting me finish in contention to win. I feel good about that because there was a chance we couldn't come out for the second half. The car was terribly loose. We were getting gear oil on the right rear tire. It was all I could do to keep it straight."
Fifty-six Late Models from across the West Coast attempted to qualify for one of the 26 starting positions. NASCAR Winston West regulars Jason Small, Austin Cameron and Brendan Gaughan joined local racers Chuck Trickle, Scott Gafforini and Jerry Spilsbury. Last years winner Mike Obrist and the 1998 track champion Mike Ray also competed. After several laps of side-by-side competition in the Legends feature, Kyle Busch passed his brother Kurt Busch at the flag to take the victory."Kurt was out of town last night at Phoenix International Raceway," said Kyle Busch. "I have to thank Craig Keough from Star Nursery for taking him out of town so much."
