It's been a foregone conclusion by most railbirds at Cajon Speedway that Danny Gay would claim his second straight street stock championship at the 3/8 mile paved oval in 2000. This Saturday night the 26-year-old second generation racer could very well make it official. Gay, who has dominated the division all season long, needs only carry a 431 point lead out of this Saturday night's 25-lap street stock main event and the title will be his. He currently has a commanding 436 marker lead over his nearest rival, Eric Evans.
Joining Gay and the street stocks at the Gillespie field track this Saturday night will be the NASCAR late model sportsman, the Grand American modifieds, the pony stocks, and the Allison legacy cars. Race time is 6:45 PM. Qualifying runs start at 5:15.
Losing no more than five points off his margin should not be a difficult task for the Lakeside resident. Only on two of the previous 16 nights the street stocks have run this year has Gay not been the top point getter during the evening. He has pocketed 11 victories so far; that total leaves him just two shy of tying the division record of 13 wins in a season. That mark is held by Danny's father Jerry (1982) and Eric Ferguson (1997). Gay also has been the fastest qualifier every night so far this year. If he is quick qualifier again this Saturday, he will equal his dad's 1982 standard of 17 straight fast times and 17 during a season. While Gay has almost a virtual lock on a whole bunch of honors in the street stocks, the same cannot be said for his dad who now runs in the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series for late model sportsman at the track. The elder Gay is one of four drivers locked in a torrid tussle for the number one spot in the standings for the track's premier division. Jerry Gay, John Tyczki, Ron Overman, and Gary Tamborelli each harbor hopes of taking the championship this year. The four are separated by just 15 points with four races remaining. With a maximum of 95 points possible on three of those nights and 145 digits available in the season finale on September 23, nothing is certain.
The elder Gay sits alone atop the points heap with 1131 markers. Tyczki is two back with 1129. Tamborelli and Overman are now tied for third with 1116. In case of a tie the first tiebreaker is most wins. There Tamborelli paces the field with four wins (he actually has five but one was in a non-points race). Gay and Tyczki have three wins apiece while Overman has a pair of victories
