The NASCAR Weekly Racing Series concludes this Saturday night at Cajon Speedway. But the point season for the late model sportsman will wait until September 23 for the local track champion is crowned. Sounds confusing. Well it is just a bit. But the explanation is quite simple. Cajon Speedway is part of the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series which includes about 100 tracks across the nation. That NASCAR point season runs from January 1 through September 9. Then the point leader at each facility is ranked (using a complicated four variable formula) to determine their regional and national champion.
Cajon Speedway is part of the Pacific Coast region, which includes nine tracks in California and Alaska. The driver who is sitting in the number one spot in the local Cajon Speedway standings after this weekend's race will be ranked against the point leader at those other eight tracks in the Pacific Coast standings.
Who will represent Cajon in the Weekly Racing Series standings? That is as difficult to answer as who will be crowned the track champion in three weeks. Jerry Gay, John Tyczki, Gary Tamborelli, and Ron Overman each has a shot at both or either title. Only30 points separate the quartet as they prepare for this Saturday night's go. So it is very conceivable that for the first time Cajon could have one driver crowned as the local track champion and another as its NASCAR Weekly Racing Series representative. Race time Saturday night is 6:45 PM. Qualifying runs will start an hour and a half earlier. Joining the late model sportsman in action on the 3/8-mile paved oval will be the Grand American modifieds, street stocks, bomber stocks, and mini-stockars. The night will conclude with the next to the last Train Race of the season. Gay, Tyczki, Tamborelli, and Overman have been swapping positions in the standings each and every week. A maximum 95 points can be earned each race night. So the 30 point spread is nothing. Gay and Tyczki both have 1190. Tamborelli has 1186. Overman has 1160. Danny Gay has already pocketed his second straight track title in the street stocks. The street stocks are included in the Exide Shortrack Series, which works just like the Weekly Racing Series. So that season also ends this weekend. Gay harbors slim hopes of winning the regional championship. But in all likelihood he will finish second there. Saturday night's bomber race could see Pat Garity finally wrap up his first track championship. Garity needs to carry a 336 point margin out of Saturday 's 20-lapper to lay claim to the title. The Cuyamaca College professor lost out on the title three years ago by one point. Garity currently has a 315 point bulge over second place Mark Holland.
