SHARP WINS 1ST OF SEASON, HILLOCK IS CROWNED CHAMPION

A eighteen car count for the final race was a surprise to everyone, but those who did show did not disappoint the fans. Qualifying set the tone for the night with Russell Butler #25 taking top honors with a 14.370, followed by Jeff Hillock #41(14.393), Zan Sharp #84(14..461) and Clint Kidd #88(14.506).

With 100 laps to run, a decision was made for no heat races, count caution laps up to five and to do a full invert for the main event.

Rick Webster #27 was on the pole and held the lead until lap five when he spun coming out of turn three bring out the first caution of the race. After getting Webster off the track the green flag was dropped on lap ten with Marty Zehr #63 up front followed by #77 Gary Porter and #50 Fred Walker. The second caution of the race took place when Jim Eaton #85 spun off the track coming out of turn three on lap eighteen. The green flew again on lap twenty-two with the leaders unchanged.

With the points championship on the line the top contenders where moving quickly to the front. With one fourth of the laps run, #66 Troy Workman spun going into turn three and getting hit from behind by #16 Brent Houskeeper. The restart on lap twenty-nine found all those in the hunt for the championship with in the top eight spots.

Lap 35 saw #98 Frank Andreason cut a tire in turn one forcing him high into #85 Jim Eaton sending him into the wall on the back stretch. The restart on lap thirty-nine still found Marty Zehr #63 out front. Lap forty-four saw Jeff Hillock #41 take over second.

The halfway mark found #63 still in front, followed by 41, 84, 88, 77, 23, 25, 37, 50 and 29 rounding out the top ten spots.

Lap 51 saw #23 Steve Brigance and #77 Gary Porter got together going into turn two bring out the caution flag to clean up the debris. The green dropped on lap 56 and the run continued until lap seventy when #41 Hillock tried to pass, Marty Zehr #63 for the lead going into turn one, getting side by side the got together coming out of turn two causing both of them to spin, bring the yellow out for lap 71 and earning them both a trip to the back of the pack.

The restart on lap 73 found #84 Zan Sharp up front followed by Clint Kidd #88, Russell Butler #25 and Joe Hood #37.

Coming out of turn four on lap eighty-four #37 Hood got into the left rear of #25 Butler going for third, causing Butler to be briefly air borne and sending some car parts onto the track bringing out the caution and earning them both a trip to the back of the field. The green dropped on lap eighty-eight with Sharp #84 still out in front. Lap ninety-four saw #23 Steve Brigance spin coming out of turn two bringing out the caution. With the one to go given on lap ninety-five setting up a four lap shoot-out for the win.

Try as he might #88 Clint Kidd could not find his way around Sharp #84 enabling Sharp to get his first win of the season. Jeff Hillock #41 finished 13th to give him a 18 point advantage over Joe Hood #37 which gave him his 4th Intermountain Late Model Series Championship.
