Holding off the pressure of Scott Busby late, Bobby Hogge IV scored the victory in the special 25 lap main event on Friday night at All Pro Series sanctioned Antioch Speedway. The win paid Hogge IV $600 aboard the JDK Motorsports sponsored GRT Modified. Busby's late spin handed the $300 second to Kenny Neu in his Cobra Modified with Randy McDaniel a $200 second. The point of the night was qualifying for the $26,000 Third Annual Winter Chevrolet 100 on Saturday, and each driver ran two ten lap qualifing heat races. McDaniel was the only driver to win two heat races in an Ira Compton car.
Of the 16 total ten lap heat races, there were 15 winners. McDaniel was the only double winner and had to come back from a penalty to win his second heat. Winners Bert Elworthy, Richard Papenhausen, Dennis Furia Sr., Bobby Hogge III, Bobby Hogge IV, David Soito Jr., Chad Chadwick, Brian Cass and Gus Cooper all did well enough to score the maximum five points to make the main event. Bobby Scott Jr., Bart Reid, Sean Becker, Tim Kennady and Dustin Jenks won other heat races, but they failed to qualify for Saturday's $6,000 to win A Main. Kennady beat Don Shelton in his win, and Shelton's second runnerup finish was good enough to put him into the big race. J.D. Willis, Scott Busby and Roger Lorenzeni also scored two seconds to qualify, and Joe Carr and Neu made the big 100 lapper with their second and third place heat race finishes.
Of those 16, Papenhausen was declared 16th, putting him in Saturday's
big race but keeping him out of the Friday night special. Current champions
Mark Wauge (Medford, OR.), Michael Paul (Petaluma), Alan Updyke
(Bakersfield), Jason Kocks (Cottage Grove, OR.) and Bobby Scott Jr.
(Watsonville) were given the other five feature starts. Neu and Hogge IV
drew front row starts with Hogge IV racing into the early lead over Neu and
Busby. Shelton and Kocks tangled in Turn 2 for a lap three caution flag.
Hogge IV continued to lead Neu, Busby, Cooper and Updyke on the restart, and
a lap seven caution flag waved for a Turn 2 crash involving Shelton, Willis
and Hogge III. As Hogge IV led the restart, Busby took second from Neu when
a yellow flag flew for Shelton and Furia. Hogge led Busby and Neu on the
restart, but a Furia and Willis crash brought out a lap nine caution.
Furia's car was too damaged to continued, and Willis was black flagged for
two yellows. Track officials knew curfew was coming up and were prepared to
call for a checkered flag at the next caution flag. Hogge IV led Busby, Neu,
Cooper and Updyke on the restart. Hogge IV was being pressured hard by
Busby, and the duo ran several laps side by side with Busby low and Hogge
high. McDaniel took fifth from Updyke on lap 14. The lead battle was
heating up when contact exiting Turn 4 on lap 17 sent Busby spinning on the
front stretch. Curfew forced a white flag that time by, and Hogge IV led the
pack to the checkered flag with Neu second. McDaniel got by Cooper for third
as Updyke rounded out the top five finishers.
