There has been a lot on the line all season long in the late model sportsman stock car racing season at Cajon Speedway. This Saturday night the drivers who battled tooth-and-nail all year for the yearly championship may tackle each other one final time on the 3/8 mile paved oval.
The Coors 100 for the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series machines is on tap at the Gillespie Field track. Race time is 6:45 PM. Sharing the racing surface will be the Ultra Wheels Spec Trucks. That group will be making their first and only local appearance of the year.
Following Saturday night's contest, only the season finale on October 14 will remain on the 2000 calendar at Cajon Speedway. The track will conclude its 39th season that night with the super modifieds, presented by Sid' Auto Body. Those radical offset machines are the fastest short track race cars on the west coast, have not raced at Cajon since 1995. That night will conclude with a Boat Trailer race. The track held its first Boat Trailer Race on July 4 and fans have been clamoring for a encore performance. But first there is the Coors 100-lapper this Saturday. The first place paycheck will be $2500, an amount matched only by a similar payout in the season opening Coors Light 100 last March. Gary Tamborelli won that night. Jerry Gay, John Tyczki, Tamborelli, and Ron Overman battled door-to-door all season long for the local championship before Gay finally prevailed. All four had a shot at the championship money and trophy entering last week's Grand Prix. Gay will lead the pack into Saturday night's fray. He had three wins during the regular season. The title was his second in the sportsman; his first one came in 1996. Previously Gay dominated the street stocks during the first half of the 1980's when he racked up five divisional titles.
But Gay does not come into the Coors contest as Cajon's hottest driver. That honor goes to Ron Overman, the senior citizen of the division. That 57 year old driver won the final two points races of the season, but ended up fourth in the points hunt after wrecking three weeks from the end of the season. Overman has already announced he will be back on the track in 2001 hoping to add a late model sportsman championship to his 1974 super stock title and 1996 Grand American modified title trophy.
