LAS VEGAS - Mike Ray and Kyle Busch won 25-lap NASCAR Late Model features on Final Lap Racing Collectibles Father's Day Night at the Bullring, effectively ending Chuck Trickle's Father's-Day streak. Trickle had won Late Model features on Father's Day weekend at the Bullring in 1999 and 2000, but was denied a "three-peat."
In the first 25-lap NASCAR Late Model feature, Busch took the lead from Dick Cobb on the second lap and was never seriously challenged. Finishing behind Busch were Mike Ray and Cobb. The victory was Busch's third of the season.
Mike Ray took his turn in victory lane following the second 25-lap Late Model feature, but was forced to work a little harder for his trophy. Ray took the lead from 2000 Bullring champion Dick Cobb on the 23rd lap. One lap later, Cobb pulled even with Ray as the pair exited Turn 4 with the checkered flag in sight. Ray and Cobb ran side-by-side down the front straightaway, with Ray arriving at the finish line first by less than three feet. Cobb finished second, followed by Kyle Busch, who had worked his way back from the rear of the field after being involved in an accident with Rich Attisani on lap 9. Attisani's car was then hit by Sam Crow and was eliminated from the event. Busch and Ray are the only Late Model drivers who have won more than one feature at the Bullring this year.
The eight-lap, $100-to-win Racer's Supply Dash for Cash was won by Mike Ray by less than a half-car length over Ray Hooper Jr.
Chuck Trickle was the evening's fastest qualifier in the Late Model division, with a lap of 15.086-sec. (not a record).
Polesitter and points leader Dan Fitzgerald led the 25-lap Grand American Modified feature from start-to-finish. Finishing second behind Fitzgerald was Sonny Wahl. Fabian Bray was third.
Fabian Bray, Sonney Wahl and Jack Dessaints won eight-lap Grand American Modified qualifying heats.
Tom Youmans passed polesitter Dan Schools in the early stages of the 20-lap Charger feature and developed a full-straightaway lead over the second-place car at the halfway point. Youman's healthy lead was erased by a caution period on lap 15, which placed second-place runner Keith Danser on his rear bumper. Undaunted, Youmans built up another insurmountable lead and went on to win his third Charger feature of the 2001 season.
Eight-lap Charger heats were won by Keith Danser and Don Sargent.
Points leader Spencer Clark was involved in a crash in Turn 2 on the second lap of the 20-lap Hitchin' Post/Exiss Legends Car feature. The multi-car accident, which was severe enough to cause a red-flag stoppage of the race, eliminated Clark's machine. Kyle Busch went on to win his second feature of the night - this time in a Legends Car - followed by Charlie Wahl and Justin Johnson. The Legends Car feature finish will remain unofficial until Tuesday, June 19. Legends Car officials issue an official finish after parts confiscated from several cars are examined for legality.
Eight-lap Legends Car qualifying heats were won by Charlie Wahl (fast-dash winner), Justin Johnson (his first-ever Legends Car checkered flag) and Bobby Ruppert.
The 10-car, 10-lap Bandolero feature was claimed by Alex Haase following a close battle with Joey Mogar, who finished second. Haase and Mogar were tied for first place in Bandolero points entering tonight's program.
Wade Powiecz Jr. won the "6-Laps-Forward, 2-Laps-Back" race. Jack Richardson of Las Vegas won the Father's Day Hula-Hoop contest and went home with four tickets to the Orleans 350 for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series at LVMS on Oct. 14. Brian Williams sang the national anthem and Matthew Yanez served as the Jr. Race Fan.
The Bullring will present the "July Blastoff" on Tuesday, July 3, featuring fireworks, a demolition derby, 75-lap Late Model feature, 40-lap Grand American Modified feature, 40-lap Hitchin' Post/Exiss Legends Car main event and a 10-lap Bandolero race. There will be no increase in admission for the holiday show ($10 for adults, $8 for senior citizens and military personnel, $3 for children 6-12 and 5-and-under free). Gates will open at 5:00 p.m.
