NASCAR Late Model rookie Kyle Busch became the first driver to win the $5,000 Hoosier Tire Challenge at the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway Saturday night.
Busch was the fastest qualifier and elected to start at the rear of the NASCAR Late Model field for the 50-lap main event to try for the $5,000 Hoosier Tire bonus. Busch drove hard to move through the field. At the halfway mark, the caution flag was thrown and the young Busch moved into third position behind Dick Cobb and race leader Bill Newman. On lap 35, Busch passed Quality Motorsports teammate Newman on the inside to take the lead. Busch led the race to the checkered flag and etched his name in the record books at the first BullringLate Model driver to collect the bonus.
Ironically, it was unclear if Busch would be a contender for Saturday’s feature event due to front-end damage sustained after he hit the wall during Friday night’s practicesession.
"I got together with another car (Friday night)," said Busch. "We got it back together faster than ever."
"We got it!" Busch exclaimed when asked about winning the Hoosier Tire Challenge. “We worked all week on it (Late Model)."

In the Outlaw Stock division, Pat Petrie and Glen Burke -- who both won heat races -- carried their momentum into the main event. Petrie held off Burke for the win.
Results for the 30-lap Hitchin’ Post/Exiss Legends Car feature – which was won by Kyle Busch -- are unofficial until a ruling is made on confiscated parts.
