BAKERSFIELD, CA -- After three weekends without an event, Mesa Marin Raceway will open its gates Saturday night August 25, for the first of four consecutive weeks of competition.
The NASCAR Late Models headline this Saturday’s "Chevron Night at the Races" with only four events are left in 2001 NASCAR Weekly Racing Series points championship. Dan Holtz leads Brandon Miller in the points chase 618 to 587, with Kevin Thompson, Kevin Small and Lance Wilson rounding out the top five. Miller chipped away at Holtz’s lead by winning on July 28.
In NASCAR Limited Late Model competition, the points battle is tight at the top with Gene Fife leading Brian Richardson by just two points, 574 to 572. Richardson is on a roll as he has won the last five main events in a row.
The Late Models and Limited Late Models will be joined Saturday night by the Street Stocks, 911 Race for Youth Series and the Super TT Motorcycle Series.
Also racing will be the Chevron High School Series with a tight battle among several of the teams. Kern Valley leads by only 8 points over Porterville and North, which are tied for 2nd place, followed by South and Shafter tied for 3rd place. Valley High and Porterville are expected to return in new cars. Paso Robles and Visalia plan to make their season debut. Chevron signed on as sponsor of the series in 2000 hosting each participating team attend the Annual Award’s Banquet at the Buck Owens Crystal Palace. Then in 2001 the Chevron dealers added additional support to the series by providing the gas for each of the teams to compete in ten events during the season..
To beat the high gas prices, Mesa Marin Raceway and Chevron will give away a one years supply of gas to a lucky race fan. Fans can sign up at Kern County participating Chevron dealers and pick up their $2.00 off coupon entry into Saturday night’s events. Besides the year’s supply of gas other prizes will be given out, including at least 100 Chevron footballs, signed by Mesa Marin drivers, Pepsi product and a BMX bicycle courtesy of Action Sports..
