KUPL FAN-CAN FINALE – CHAMPIONSHIP NIGHT! RACE RESULTS

Portland Speedway

Eric Sayre of Vancouver, WA survived a incident-filled main event to record another victory in the NASCAR Grand American Modified Division at the Portland Speedway Friday night. Unofficially with the win, Sayre edged Tom Pinkowsky, also of Vancouver, in the pursuit of the season championship for that division by only one point. Due to this extremely narrow margin, the final standings are being thoroughly reviewed. Going into the night’s contest Pinkowsky, who finished fifth in the main event, held a 9-point margin over Sayre.

The evening was also the finale in most of the Speedway’s other divisions. The ShortTrack Sportsman division championship was earned by Martin Stanwood of Portland, OR., with Brad Tanner of Clackamas, OR racing to victory in the Sportsman main event. In the Street Stock division, Scott Puncochar of Hillsboro, OR drove to his second straight season championship. Puncochar will move up to the Grand American Modified division in 2002. It was also a successful night for Street Stock driver Willy Thom of Dundee, OR, who finished first in the division’s main event as well as earning wins in the trophy dash and heat race. Dan Cherington of Vancouver, WA added another main event win in the Figure 8 division and locked up his fourth season championship. The Bomber division championship was won by Jeremy Brookshire of Eagle Creek, OR.

Divisional Rookies of the Year include Hal Farness in Sportsman and Brian Puncochar in Street Stocks.
