Michael Wright dodged another bullet to win the 2001 MSRA Points Championship. Going into the last race at Mesa-Marin, Wright just needed to take the green in the Main Event to secure the win. However, things have not been that easy for Wright this season.
Wright came into the pits after his first practice pouring oil from a huge hole in the block. Things looked grim for Wright to continue. After talking to Scott Porter and the #66 car crew, Wright crew chief Michael Wright Sr. decided that the motor in the #66 car was a good match to be transferred to the #23 car. Porter had a lock on the #4 points position so he decided to let Wright use the engine.
Both crews set to work. Using the Mesa Marin tow truck to lift the engine from one car to the other, the crews not only got the engine in an running, they were in time to qualify.
Wright qualified high enough to get into the main, without having to run the B-Main. A ninth place finish in the Main Event cemented his championship. Eddie Secord, his challenger did everything he could to put pressure on the Wright team by finishing first in qualifying and winning the Main Event. Secord said that he was glad that Wright was able to run because he would not have wanted to win the title because of Wright's misfortune.
