EL CAJON, CA. (04/13/02). Things are beginning to settle down just a bit at Cajon Speedway. The out of towners who held forth at the track the first two weeks have departed. The opening night jitters for the local stock car racers were erased last Saturday night. Now it's time for a return to what qualifies as normal on the 3/8-mile paved oval. It's time for round two of the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series presented by Dodge at the 3/8 mile paved oval. And this year the late model sportsman drivers have a little something extra they are chasing during the year.
One of them will pocket an extra $1000 at season's end. Sid's Auto Body will present the award to the driver who earns the most Hard Charger Awards during the year.
Each week there is a Hard Charger Award for the driver who earns the most passing points that night; it usually pays $200. The driver who earns the Hard Charger Award will also earn one point. The driver with the most points at the end of the year will be paid the $1000 Sid's Auto Body bonus. In case of a tie, the driver that reaches his point total first is the winner. To be eligible to earn the point for the night, the weekly Hard Charger Award winner must run a Sid's Auto Body sticker on both the left and right sides of his or her car.
This Saturday night the NASCAR late model sportsman, street stock, pony stock, and bomber stock car drivers will be back in action. Race time is 6:45 PM. Qualifying runs start at 5:15 PM. The gates will open at 4:00 when practice starts. Admission prices are $10 on the east side and $9 on the west side for adults. Kids ages 6 - 12 are $3; children under six are free with a paid adult admission.
Four main events will cap the busy evening at the Gillespie Field track, now in its 42nd year of operation. A 40-lap feature is scheduled for the late model sportsman. The street stocks will run a 25-lap finale. Twenty-lap affairs are on tap for both the pony stocks and the bomber stockers. The local Grand American modified division waits one more week before starting its 2002 season on April 20.
