1st Responders Night Results at Evergreen Speedway

MONROE, Washington — This past Saturday night September 10 at Evergreen Speedway on 1st Responders Tribute Night the racing was equal to the heat. The record temperature in the area and the near full moon made things interesting for the NASCAR division racers. The Speedway Chevrolet NASCAR Whelen All American Series Super Late Model 50-lap feature was won by Daniel Moore. The Les Schwab Tires NASCAR Street Stock division had twin 25-lap mains. In race #1 the winner was Duane Schosboek and race #2 was won by Joe Kneeland. Jon Roberts won the Foster Press NASCAR Mini-Stock main. The Extreme V-8 main was a flag pole race with ‘Crashin’ Kenny Bates winning and the Cub Scouts of America Hornet division winner was Jaime Corbett. There were two races for the many 1st Responders. In race #1 Cary Stewart from Arlington, WA Fire Department was the winner and in race #2 the winner was Cal Bowles from the Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Police Department. A rather warm night for our location in the Pacific Northwest made it comfortable for the fans but a bit too warm for the drivers.

"Next up at Evergreen Speedway is the start of two Saturdays of championship racing. "

Moore led from wire to wire in the 50-lap Super Late Model main. The WSU student won his second in a row on the 3/8-mile oval. He and Jeff Knight put on quite the show with close racing and some side by side action. Moore accredited his second in a row win to his crew for finding the problem with the car last race, a problem with the brakes. Knight finished second and Tom Hughs third. With one race to go in their season the Super Late Model division points got closer but a strong run on September 24 championship night for Naima Lang (finished fourth) will win him his third SLM title.

The Street Stocks held two 25-lap mains on the hot night. In race #1 Schosboek came from the back of the field to win for the first time in a new car that he showed up with, three races ago. Darrel Lutovsky gave Schosboek all he could handle with the two racing hard for many laps. The new car of Schosboek was a bit stronger towards the end to pull out the win. Brian Cottrell who had won three of the last four events finished third. In race #2, Kneeland who had finished ninth in the first race due mechanical troubles was able to start up toward the front and used that to his advantage for the win and maintaining the division points lead heading into their championship on September 24. Cottrell finished second ahead of Jason McQuinn who had his best finish ever as a Street Stock racer.

Mini-Stock driver Roberts had his Mazda dialed in and was able to pick off cars on his way to the front and his fourth win of the season. Scott LaCross tried valiantly to hold back Roberts and settled for second maintaining his point lead going to the last race on the 24th. The big finish of the night went to Molly Helmuth who had her best ever finish. The petite 16-year olds finish was no surprise as she has gotten better each week and has been a strong qualifier the last month. A fire last race forced her out of what may have even been a better finish. She announced on the podium during the awards ceremony that she will be racing a Super Late Model on the 24th for the first time along with racing her Mini-Stock and also her Pro 4 Truck.

Next up at Evergreen Speedway is the start of two Saturdays of championship racing. On Saturday September 17 it is the NASCAR Super Figure Eight Championship Night presented by Seattle RV. The top six drivers in this division are only 42-points apart and the top four 22-points and the top two 3-points. Adding to that drama is that three of the top four are from the same family with dad as the leader and his two sons along with last year’s champion in the top four. It does not get any more exciting with a fifty lap feature scheduled on the fast figure eight track. In addition the popular 4-cylider figure eight division the Stinger 8’s will have their championship night along with the championship for the Cub Scouts of America sponsored Hornet division each with 50-lap features scheduled. The traveling Northwest Legends Series and Vintage Modified Series will be there to round out the energetic night of racing at the ‘Northwest Center of Racing’ Evergreen Speedway. The front gates will open at 4pm with racing at 6pm on this all important night. For tickets go to the web at www.evergreenspeedway.com or call 360-805-6100.
