VENTURA, California — VRA Sprint Car point leader Greg Taylor made a strong move in turn two on the last lap of the 30 lap feature to get by Josh Ford who had led the first 29 laps of Saturday's Sprint Car event. Taylor's 4th win of the season gives him a 245 point lead over Ford in the season point race. The race saw hard fought battles throughout the field of competitors. One red flag event marred the running when Brian Camarillo and Kyle Smith flipped in turn three. Smith went to the hospital for a check up. Following Taylor and Ford across the finish line were Steve Conrad, Dakota Kershaw and Jimmy Crawford. Heat race wins on Saturday went to Markus Niemela, Brent Camarillo and Dakota Kershaw.
VRA Senior Sprints were in competition going for a special added purse donated by Cyndi Jewett in memory of her husband and former IMCA/VRA Sprint and Senior Sprint driver Jim Jewett who passed away in August. Her kind donation allowed the Seniors to race for a $1000 first place and $130 to start purse. With the bigger purse in their eyes the race was a fast and furious one that saw Bruce Douglass led lap 1-12 only to be passed by Richard McCormick on lap 13. McCormick then led the rest of the laps to take his first win of 2011. Douglass followed him across the line with series point leader Rob Kershaw in third, Victor Davis in fourth and Russell DeBlauw in fifth. Two heat races were run with wins going to Victor Davis and Clif Warren.
VRA Dwarf Cars were back in action Saturday. In Senior competition, Rick Lapka continued his winning ways with a strong win over point leader George Calvo, Mike Neal, Keith Vondersaar and Mitch Hedrick.
The one Senior Heat race win went to George Sack. In Pro competition, season point leader Ray Estrada took another win over Devlin Autrey, Mike Lewis, Kevin Calvo and Russell Blades. Two heats were run with wins going to Angel Figueroa and Ray Estrada.
VRA Sport Compacts were back in action for the first time since the FAIR race. Once again Trevor Fitzgibbon put his number 28 Pinto out front and took another win. Following him were Jess Carluccci, Ryan Changus, Brad Long and Michaela Stanton. Their heat race win went to Brad Long.
A small field of three Mod Lites raced with the heat race and main event going to Mike Neal over Mike Sweeney Jr. and Chris Kordner.
The final classes racing on Saturday were our kids classes. In Junior Midgets Brennan Rogers took another win over point leader Devin McCree, Miles Hedrick, Tommy Velasquez and Kayle Brazel. Heat race wins went to Velasquez and Rogers. In Pistons J D Brown took another win over Zack Chavez, Blake Hendricks, Trevor Hansen and Garrett Egan. In Superchargers, Nick Velasquez took wins in the heat and main event over Destyn Garcia.
Racing resumes next Saturday night with a full program featuring VRA Sprints, VRA Midgets, Ford Focus Midgets Junior Ford Focus Midgets, IMCA Modifieds and VRA Go Karts.
