LAS VEGAS – Thirty-two drivers – including two from Brazil and one from Italy – have filed entries for Saturday’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Smith’s 350 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
The entry list is headed by four-time series champion Ron Hornaday Jr. Despite his multi-championship status, none of his 50 wins were scored in Las Vegas.
Two-time series champion Todd Bodine from Chemung, N.Y. knows the way to LVMS’ victory lane after winning the 2005 Smith’s 350 and 2001 Sam’s Town 300 in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.
From Brazil: Nova Prata’s Miguel Paludo began his racing career as a teen in go-kart racing in his home country. Paludo also won two consecutive (2008 and 2009) Porsche GT3 championships. Brasilia’s Nelson Piquet Jr. is the son of three-time Formula 1 champion Nelson Piquet. Piquet Jr. competed on the Formula 1 circuit in 2008 and 2009.
From Italy: Como’s “Mad Max” Papis has competed in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series since 2006. He won the Rolex Grand-Am Sports Car championship in 2004.
Of note: Max Gresham hails from the NASCAR K&N Series and will make his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series debut in Las Vegas. Brian Ickler will drive the No. 18 Toyota owned by Las Vegas native Kyle Busch. Hometown hero Brendan Gaughan won the Smith’s 350 in 2003.
Saturday’s Smith’s 350 is scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m. and actress-singer Deana Martin will sing the national anthem. Spectator gates will open at 10 a.m.
A free NASCAR driver autograph session will take place from 7:30-8:30 p.m. on Friday at the Stratosphere Hotel & Casino.
