Boise Driver Hits Her Marks to Win First Night of Dirty Cup at Meridian

MERIDIAN, Idaho — Even in the unpredictable world of dirt track Outlaw Karts, it’s important for a driver to hit the marks while sliding around the oval.

"Lee’s victory was part of the inaugural dirt track event featuring racers that resemble miniature sprintcars as well as flat track go-karts in one class."

Boise, Idaho’s Brenna Lee took the requirement a little further Friday night during the first round of Al Russell’s Dirty Cup at ASA-sanctioned Meridian Speedway.

Dodging the mayhem of a three-car wreck in Turn 2 on the eight lap, Lee led wire-to-wire to win the 30-lap Open 500cc main event on the 1/9th-mile high-banked dirt oval.

Then she was right on the money in the post-race weigh-in. The maximum weight of a winged Outlaw Kart was set at 435 pounds, and Lee’s machine weighed in to ounce at the threshold.

Lee’s victory was part of the inaugural dirt track event featuring racers that resemble miniature sprintcars as well as flat track go-karts in one class.

Other main event winners included Ron Hollis of Payette, Idaho in the 250cc Midgets; Travis Lively traveled from Roseburg, Ore., to win the Desperado class in which racers age 30 and older race 500cc winged karts; Craig Anderson of Boise captured the Open Flat Kart feature; Kyle Alberding of Winston, Ore., the son of Meridian pavement record-holder and former ASA Northwest Sprintcar Racing Association champion Andy Alberding, won the 125cc main event; Nampa, Idaho’s Jason Kellerer won the Jr. 500cc feature; Daytona Wurtz of Boise, the daughter of Meridian Speedway Late Model Sportsman driver Dennis Wurtz II, won the Hot Rod title; Matthew Lee of Caldwell, Idaho, took home the Box Stock title; and Brenna Patton of Boise won the Bandit feature for drivers ages 5-8.

The racing continues Saturday with more feature races. The drivers in each class who earn the most points over the two-day event will take home the Dirty Cup.

An overwhelming number of race entries offered fantastic and exciting side-by-side racing in the early going of the opening night of Al Russell’s Dirty Cup at ASA-sanctioned Meridian Speedway on Friday.

Some last-lap passes for the lead in the heat races whet the appetites of dirt-track racing fans for the main events that were run on 1/9th-mile oval later in the night.

Racers from 5 years old to over 30 packed into the pits at the speedway for the unique event. The overall winners in each class will earn the inaugural Dirty Cup after Saturday’s racing.

A total of 70 flat karts and outlaw karts, which look like miniature winged sprintcars, sped around the dirt oval Friday night in a variety of classes.

Al Russell’s Dirty Cup continues Saturday with qualifying starting at 6 p.m., a half-hour earlier than originally scheduled because of the overwhelming turnout of competitors for the first night of racing Friday.

Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for senior citizens and children ages 7-11, and children 6 and younger get in free.

Access to the event will be through the pit gate. The main entrance will not be open.
