Pumpkin Fun at the Madera Speedway

MADERA, California — Smiles were everywhere during the 5th annual Pumpkin Smash Halloween Bash at the Madera Speedway, from kids on the track smashing pumpkins, to the drivers getting out of their cars this night was all about having fun, fun, and more fun.

Mark Jackie won the heavyweight fight of the night in the race called the boat drags. He used a bait and switch move on Russ “Superman” Johnson as he knocked Johnson’s boat off on lap ten ending the crowd pleasing destruction.

In the fun filled Pumpkin Smash 200 lap enduro race a record thirty six cars took the green flag, that’s right I said thirty six cars! David Pabst has been known as king of the Madera Speedway in the enduro ranks, but several other top drivers had other plans for the 5th annual Pumpkin Smash.

Ryan Strmiska ended the Pabst winning streak on Saturday night as he drove perfectly through the huge field of cars on the slippery surface to take the $2,000 win. Pabst came in second, with Richard Herzog, Rich Denman, and Randy Gems rounding out the top five.

“The enduro drivers really have done a great job, and they understand how to have fun, laugh and smile while being serious about their racing. These are very cost effective race cars and they are among the most entertaining drivers to watch, so it is a great combination. We really appreciate their hard work in growing this division” Kenny Shepherd.

The open late model race featured the return of two past champions as well as a host of other top talent. When the checkers went into the air it was Stan Osterland that took home the $1,000 win followed by Rick Thompson, Matt Erickson, Ray Mayer and Aaron Mullins for the top five.

In the Hobby Stock open it was a story of David verses goliath, and when the smoke cleared it was a 4 cylinder car driven by Del McIntosh in victory lane picking up the $500 check! Richard Herzog came in second, and by the way Richard was the iron man of the night racing in just about every division of this fun filled night, in third it was Chuck Aguirre, fourth and fifth went to Lloyd Bamping and Howard Holden.

In the 4- Banger open Donnie Darter picked up the win, followed by Joe Richmuth, Mark Jackie, Billy Congdon, and Sam Williams for the top five.

Plans are already in the works for the 6th annual Pumpkin Smash at the Madera Speedway in 2012!
