IRWINDALE, California — - From before the dawn of time ( well, at least since the mid-early years of the 20th Century) really hot VWs have happily been some of the most fun there is on wheels. Air-cooled, horizontally-opposed engines built out of an exotic blend of aluminum and magnesium called electron metal, Solex carburetors, Beru spark plugs, and whistling cooling fans all valve clatter and rumble guts.
"Drags, Car Show, Swap Meet, Trick or Treat!"
And every so often (about twice a year to be a just bit more precise) these tiny, terrific Teutonic tornados turn up at Toyota Speedway under the tutelage of the peripatetic personnel at Periscope Productions to take turns trying to tear up the tarmac in front of throngs of enthusiastic true believers.
It is (and as it will be again this warm, sunny Sunday) purely and simply, a sight to behold, an automotive happening that harks back to the tribal spirit of brand ownership One drove a Volksie, a Vee Dub, a Bug, a Beetle whatever term of endearment you used Either that, or your best friend had one, and/or the coolest guy or gal in class who had a Cabriolet.
And so early this Sunday morning, the entire east parking lot will become "WOLFSBURGDALE". Car show & shine, drag races, costume contest, food, frolic, fun, a super swap meet, car models, model cars, and more "wearable" stuff with VW logos emblazoned upon them then anyone has possibly ever seen Anywhere!
But, all will not be nostalgia at Hot VWs DRAG DAY this Sunday There'll be a water-pumper or two, and maybe a Diesel-powered machine too! Of course, being the day before Halloween Everything will be fun-scary and (suffice it to say) every dentist in the county will be VERY happy with the multi-candy-handouts to the kids!
Gates to this cool (hot) daylight event will open early: 7AM! This is the season finale and should be a real wing-ding for Volksie fans and friends!
