Lakeport, California -- The fans were treated to an action packed weekend at Lakeport Speedway, and after all the smoke had cleared on Saturday after the large fireworks show put on in the infield, that action was just getting set for new stars to shine during the main event during Sundays races. With a total of nine different divisions racing throughout the weekend, along with fireworks and a destruction derby there was not lack of entertainment to be had by those in attendance.
The bomber took to the track first on Saturday with over twenty cars starting the race it was going to be a good show. The drivers had raced for their positions in Sunday’s main based on their finish in the heat race on Saturday and that saw Roman Rose of Lakeport starting on the pole with Charlie Collins starting on the outside front row. The duo battle back and forth, but rookie driver Travis Thorn was sitting in third spot waiting for one of the two front guys to slip up a little, because he had a fast race car and was waiting to make a move. Colllins passed Rose for the lead on lap number 10 with Rose losing second spot to Thorn on lap number Twelve. Now Collins had to deal with the pesky rookie pecking at his bumper all the way till lap twenty one when Thorn made the pass for the lead never to look back taking his first victory in one of the most prestigious races of the year, topping all the best bomber drivers on the north coast. In the 2012 season Thorn is going to be the one to watch and see if he makes a run for the championship as he starts off the New Year.
The action did not stop with the bomber the mini stocks saw out of town driver Jason Shaha starting on the back row right next to 2011 track champion Sean Keown. This set up the two guys that have always battled hard to battle their way from the rear of the field to the front to see who was going to take the grand prize over the weekend and the bragging right for the rest of the year of winning the October Classic. It did not take the two drivers but three laps to make their way to the front of the field, but this time Keown got the first with Shaha on his bumper. Shaha tried looking low and high, bumping Keown letting him know he was still there, but at the checkers it was Keown over Shaha.
The Coors Light Modifieds saw a full field of cars take to the track, with Dustin Deroiser starting on the poll and Richie Potts starting on the outside of the front row. The action was fast paced with Potts jumping out to the early lead followed by Thomas Wright. The action was marred with an early caution as Kyle Tellstrom’s car blew a transmission and retired to the pits. On the restart it saw Wright try to jump to the outside and make the pass stick. The two veteran drivers battled side by side for many laps, with wright taking time to lay back and cool his tires off before charging hard again to try and make the pass. The two put on one hell of a show of sportsmanship know of the two drivers, and with all the efforts that Wright put on his challenges came up a few feet short as the checkers fell it was Potts taking the win followed by Wright.
Winners in the other division saw Eddie Klien take the victory in the Clover Hydro Jammers, Kyle Tellstrom take the main event in the Lake County Off Road Extreme Asphalt Outlaws, the street stock victory went to Frank Agierre of Roseville.
