Greg Pursley will be going for a record third straight Phoenix win when the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West heads to Arizona this week to close out its season with the Casino Arizona 125 at Phoenix International Raceway on Saturday, Nov. 12.
The race, which will be televised live on SPEED, has attracted 47 entries - with drivers representing 10 states - as well as Canada, Mexico and Brazil.
Pursley, who has already clinched the 2011 series championship, could become the first series driver with three consecutive series wins at the one-mile speedway in the Valley of the Sun. A year ago he won this event while establishing a track record in qualifying. A win at PIR in this year's season opener in February, meanwhile, served as a springboard for his successful championship campaign. Pursley returns to Phoenix with an insurmountable 318-point lead in the standings. Already with six wins under his belt, another would give him seven wins in 14 events, a rare .500 season at this level of racing.
PIR has become an adopted home track to Pursley. Several years ago the Southern California native moved to Parker, Ariz. - a town along the Colorado River where the Gene Price Motorsports team is based.
"Phoenix is one of my favorite tracks," Pursley said. "I've been going there a long time, for many years running the Southwest Tour. I came close to winning a lot of races there in the tour, but never did. We started running the K&N West car there and won the last two in a row. We're really excited about going back."
This will mark the first series race at Phoenix since the track's resurfacing and reconfiguration this year. Pursley got a chance to check out the improvements during tire testing in August and is anxious to return.
"As far as the new configuration, I'm excited about going," he said. "We went down there and did the tire test for Goodyear. I'm pretty sure we came up with a really good tire package for the race. It's going to be pretty cool. I think it's going to be an all-round great venue."
